Between 2014 and 2015, the Southeast Region lost more than one million salaried workers in local branches of companies and other organizations listed in the IBGE’s Central Registry of Enterprises. That was the biggest decrease of employed persons among the Major Regions: -4.2%. As a result, the Southeast concentrates, for the first time in history, less than half (49.8%) of the salaried persons in the country. In 2014, the Region had 50.2% of the employed persons in Brazil.

“Decrease was mostly influenced by manufacturing industry, which lost almost 363 thousand salaried persons, and by construction, with minus 200 thousand employees”, says Kátia Carvalho, register analyst. “Administrative activities (-143,338) and trade (-134,096) also recorded significant losses, she adds.

Also, the Southeast was the only Major Region to record decrease in the number of local branches (-0.8%). So, its level of participation fell from 51.6% to 51.1%.

The Southeast ended up with a decrease of 23 thousand establishments, a significant figure considering the reduction in the trade sector (4,185 companies). Trade in Brazil lost 39,225 local branches in one year, and 87% of these establishments were in the Southeast.

In 2015, 5.1 million companies and other organizations listed in the IBGE’s Central Register of Enterprises had 5.6 million local branches employing 46.6 million salaried persons. Local branches are defined as business addresses of companies and other organizations located all over the country.
