From March to April 2018, the retail increased 1.0% in the seasonally-adjusted series, according to the Monthly Survey of Trade released today by the IBGE. With the exception of other articles of personal and domestic use - which remained stable - all other activities registered an increase in sales.

According to Isabela Nunes, survey manager, the year 2018 has been recording a rapid pace of sales for trade, which was further intensified in March and April. In comparison with December 2017, the cumulative gain in the last four months was 3.0%. But Nunes points out that despite the improvement, trade has not yet recovered everything it lost in 2015 and 2016.

“Even with the improvement in the months of 2018, trade, in the seasonally-adjusted comparison, is still 6.0% below the highest point in the series, which was in October 2014," she explains.

In the expanded retail trade - which also includes sales of vehicles and construction materials - the March-April 2018 change was 1.3%, seasonally-adjusted. This was the fourth consecutive positive rate, which generated a cumulative gain of 3.7% in this period. But the expanded retail is still 11.5% below the highest point of the series, which was recorded in August 2012.
