Fuels boost forecast of August's inflation

The Extended National Consumer Price Index 15 (IPCA-15) had a change of 0.35% in August, the second biggest result of the year, just behind February (0.54%), and well above July (-0.18%). The sector of Transportation recorded the highest increase, advancing 1.35% and 0.24 percentage points of influence on the index. It was affected by the fuel price rice (5.96%), with a highlight to gasoline, which grew 6.43% against July's IPCA-15, and to ethanol, rising 5.36%.

By areas, the Metropolitan Area of Salvador registered the highest rise in the inflation forecast (0.59%), influenced by the 13.28% increase of fuels: gasoline, up 15.67%, and ethanol, up 8.24%. In the Metropolitan Area of Belém, transportation boosted inflation with the 16.61% increase of intercity bus tickets, in effect since April 7.

The IPCA-15 is an indicator, calculated by the IBGE, to measure the inflation between the second half of a month and the first half of the reference month. The indicator comprises families with monthly income of one to 40 minimum wages and it encompasses the Metropolitan Areas of Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, Recife, São Paulo, Belém, Fortaleza, Salvador, Curitiba, and also Brasília and Goiânia.
