The President of the IBGE, Roberto Olinto, took office yesterday, June 1st, in a ceremony with the presence of the ministries of Planning, Dyogo Henrique de Oliveira, and Finance, Henrique Meirelles. The new President of the Brazilian Development Bank - BNDES, Paulo Rabello de Castro, also took office in the same ceremony, after 11 months as the President of the IBGE.

In his speech, Mr. Olinto advocated the integration of official information in a national system. He also advocated the use of administrative records, produced by different government offices, as a way to reduce the burden of information requested by a number of surveys carried out by the IBGE. To do this, the new president warned about the need to share information among the institutions that produce it.

Credibility

Mr. Olinto also reaffirmed the commitment of the institution with credibility. "We are committed to keep our credibility, as we are one of the most important offices of the Brazilian State. We take very seriously the mission to portray the country for the exercise of citizenship", stressed him.

According to Mr. Olinto, today the IBGE is more respected abroad than within Brazil. An evidence of this is that the IBGE chairs the Statistical Commission of the United Nations. He also highlighted that the IBGE is at the forefront in the world, as only Brazil and Mexico have official agencies joining statistics and geosciences.

Roberto Olinto was the Director of Surveys of the IBGE, a position he took office in August 2014. He joined the institution in 1980 at the Department of Summary Statistics and Economic Studies. Mr. Olinto coordinated the National Accounts from 2005 to 2014. At the international level, he is a current member of the experts group in National Accounts of the United Nations.

Meritorious choice

In his speech, Henrique Meirelles highlighted the nomination of Roberto Olinto as a meritorious choice and stressed the impact data like the GDP and the IPCA have in the Brazilian economy.

Dyogo Cardoso stated that it was a pleasure to nominate Roberto Olinto to the presidency of the IBGE. "He is extremely respected either inside or outside the IBGE. I have no doubt about that", stressed him.

Cardoso also recognized the excellence of the institution and reassured his commitment with the Agriculture Census and the Consumer Expenditure Survey - POF. "Make [things] different does not mean make less. It means make more and better", stressed him.

Paulo Rabello de Castro reinforced his affection to the IBGE. "Once IBGEster, always IBGEster! Do not tinker with the IBGE! Do not tinker with 80 years of history!", concluded him.
