The national industry grew 0.6% between March and April 2017. This is shown in the Monthly Survey of Industry: Physical Production - PIM-PF released today by the IBGE. As the first positive figure in the year, the industrial output was not sufficient to completely offset the drop of -1.3% reported between February and March 2017.

"The industrial sector still remains slow. Besides not offsetting the loss in the previous month, the 0.6% index still leaves the industry 19.8% below the top of the time series, registered in June 2013", states André Macedo, manager of the IBGE.

Comparing the months of April in 2016 and 2017, the industry retreated 4.5%, the most intense drop since October 2016 (-7.5%). Food products exerted the biggest negative influence (-16.4%), followed by coke, petroleum products and biofuels (-7.8%).

According to the survey, the industrial sector recorded a cumulative drop of 0.7% in the first four months of 2017. The cumulative indicator in the last 12 months continued to reduce the pace of decline, started in June 2016 (-9.7%).
