In August, retail sales change -0.1%

In August 2022, the volume of sales in the national retail trade changed -0.1% compared to July, in the seasonally adjusted series. The quarterly moving average was -0.8%. In the non-adjusted series, compared to August 2021, trade grew 1.6%. In the year, the cumulative rate was 0.5% and in the last twelve months, -1.4%.

In the extended retail trade, which includes the activities of Motor vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and Construction material, the volume of sales fell by 0.6% compared to July. The quarterly moving average was -1.1%. The volume of sales compared to August 2021 fell by 0.7%. The cumulative index in the year was -0.8% and in the last 12 months, -2.0%.

Five of the eight activities had positive rates in the seasonally adjusted series

In August 2022, in the seasonally adjusted series, five of the eight activities surveyed had positive results: Textiles,wearing apparel and footwear (13.0%), Fuels and lubricants (3.6%), Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (2.1%), Furniture and household appliances (1.0%) and Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (0.2%).

The activities with negative changes were: Office, IT and communication equipment and supplies for  (-1.4%), Other articles for personal and household use (-1.2%) and Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic articles and toiletries (-0.3%).

The additional extended retail sectors, on the other hand, presented a different behavior: a 4.8% increase in Motor vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces and a 0.8% decrease in Construction material.

Trade grows 1.6% compared to August 2021, with an increase in five of the eight activities

In relation to August 2021, five of the eight activities increased: Fuels and lubricants (30.2%), Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (19.0%), Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic articles and toiletries (6.6 %), Office, computer and communication equipment and supplies (2.1%) and Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (1.4%).

Three sectors fell in the year-on-year comparison: Other articles for personal and household use (-10.5%), Furniture and household appliances (-8.5%), and Textiles, wearing apparel and footwear (-5.6%).

Both activities of extended retail trade dopped: Motor vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces fell 4.1% and Construction material, 7.1%.

The activity of Fuels and lubricants grew 30.2% compared to August 2021, the seventh consecutive month of increase. The activity was also responsible for the largest positive contribution: 2.8 pp totaling 1.6%. In the year, the sector accumulates growth of 10.0%, above the growth until July (7.0%), accelerated by the drop in fuel prices in the last two months. The cumulative rate in twelve months is at 4.4%.

The group of Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery had an increase of 19.0% in sales compared to August 2021, it is the fourth consecutive growth (25.8% in May, 2.7% in June and 11.0% in July). The cumulative result for the year is at 17.6% and the cumulative result in twelve months is at 8.4%.

Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic articles and toiletries grew 6.6% in sales compared to August 2021. This is the tenth consecutive positive rate for the sector. Year-to-date, the increase until August was 7.4%. In the last twelve months, the cumulative result is 6.1%.

For Office, IT and communication equipment and supplies, there was an increase of 2.1% compared to August 2021, becoming positive relation to July (-0.2%). The cumulative rate of the year is at 0.8% and that of the twelve months, at -2.9%.

The activity of Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco grew 1.4% in sales compared to August 2021, after falling 0.3% in July. In the year, the cumulative index was 0.5% and in twelve months, changing from a fall of 1.0% up to July to -0.4% in August, the activity showed a decrease in the intensity of losses.

Other articles of personal and household use, which includes department stores, opticians, jewelry stores, sporting goods, toy stores, etc., fell by 10.5% compared to August 2021, the fourth consecutive drop in this indicator. It was the biggest influence as a negative result for the global index: -1.4 pp totaling 1.6%. In 2022, up to August, the sector accumulated losses of 7.9% in relation to the same period in 2021. In twelve months, the result was also negative: -6.9%.

Furniture and household appliances retreated 8.5% compared to August 2021, the fifth consecutive month of reduction. In the last 15 months, only March 2022 showed a positive rate (7.2%). The cumulative index in the year was -9.9%, and the cumulative index in twelve months was -14.3%.

The group of Textiles, apparel and footwear fell 5.6% compared to August 2021, after falling 16.2% in the previous month. In the year, the sector accumulates a high of 8.5% and, in twelve months, of 4.2%.

The activity Motor vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces had a reduction of 4.1% in sales compared to August 2021, the third consecutive decline, but with a smaller amplitude (-7.1% in June and -8.5% in July). The cumulative index in the year is -1.4% and the twelve-month cumulative index went from 0.8% up to July to -0.9% up to August, showing its first drop since April 2021.

The Construction material group fell 7.1% in sales compared to August 2021, the fifth consecutive decline. In the last 14 months, only March recorded growth: 1.2%. As a result, the year 2022 has accumulated losses since January, reaching -8.2% until August. The cumulative index in twelve months is -8.6%.

Sales are up in 15 FUs compared to July

In the seasonally adjusted series, 15 of the 27 Federation Units had positive results, especially: Paraíba (27.1%), Roraima (3.9%) and Federal District (3.6%). Among the falls, Sergipe (-2.2%), Rondônia (-1.9%) and Pernambuco (-1.7%) stand out.

In the same comparison, in extended retail, 14 of the 27 Federation Units had an increase, especially: Paraíba (17.2%), Tocantins (5.4%) and Roraima (3.8%). Pressing negatively, Espírito Santo (-3.2%), Pernambuco (-2.4%) and Goiás (-1.8%) stand out. Rio Grande do Norte showed stability (0.0%) from July to August.

Compared to August 2021, there were positive results in 20 of the 27 Federation Units, especially in: Paraíba (35.6%), Roraima (16.5%) and Mato Grosso (16.3%). Pressing negatively were Rio de Janeiro (-6.7%), Pernambuco (-5.0%) and Rondônia (-3.8%). Goiás registered stability (0.0%).

In the extended retail trade, 17 of the 27 Federation Units had positive results, especially: Paraíba (22.5%), Mato Grosso (8.9%) and Amapá (8.3%). On the other hand, there were decreases in Pernambuco (-13.3%), Rio de Janeiro (-10.7%) and Bahia (-8.6%).
