In January, industry falls in 6 of the 15 places surveyed

In the 0.8% decline of the domestic industry in January (seasonally adjusted series), only six of the 15 surveyed places recorded negative rates. The sharpest drop was in Mato Grosso (-5.4%), followed by Espírito Santo (-2.6%), Bahia (-2.2%), São Paulo (-1.8%), Rio de Janeiro (-1.3%) and Ceará (-0.4%). On the other hand, Amazonas (5.2%) had the highest rate, with Pernambuco (3.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (2.6%), Goiás (2.6%), Pará (1.7% %), Northeast Region (1.0%), Santa Catarina (0.8%), Minas Gerais (0.7%) and Paraná (0.7%) coming next. Also in the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average for the industry as a whole fell by 0.2% in the quarter ended in January 2019 over the level of the previous month. Nine places recorded negative rates, with a highlight to Pernambuco (-1.9%), Espírito Santo (-1.7%), the Northeast Region (-1.6%), Bahia (-1.6%) and Mato Grosso ( -1.1%). On the other hand, Goiás, with a 2.2% growth, registered the highest increase in January 2019.

In the comparison with January 2018, the industrial sector fell 2.6% in January 2019, with ten of the 15 places showing negative rates. It is worth mentioning that January 2019 (22 days) had the same number of working days as the same month of the previous year (22).

Amazonas (-10.5%) and Mato Grosso (-9.2%) recorded the sharpest drops, due to falls observed in beverage sectors (syrup preparations for industrial beverages) and computer equipment, electronic and optical products (televisions) in the first place; and of food products (fresh or cooled beef, cake, bagasse, bran and other residues from soybean extraction and crude soybean oil) and wood products (sawn, planed or polished wood) in the second.

The Northeast Region (-5.7%), Bahia (-5.5%), São Paulo (-5.3%) and Pernambuco (-5.0%) also registered sharper negative results than the national average (-2.6%), whereas Rio de Janeiro (-1.5%), Ceará (-1.4%), Espírito Santo (-1.1%) and Pará (-0.1%) completed the set of places with production decline this month.

On the other hand, Paraná (8.1%) had the highest increase. The other positive results were in Goiás (5.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (5.7%), Minas Gerais (1.2%) and Santa Catarina (1.2%).

In the cumulative index in the last 12 months, the industry increased 0.5% in January 2019, but the industry has been losing pace since July 2018 (3.4%). Seven of the 15 sites surveyed showed positive rates in January 2019, but 12 showed less dynamism than in December, following the trend of the national industry, which decreased from 1.2% to 0.5%.

Amazonas (from 4.7% to 1.2%), Pará (from 9.6% to 8.2%), Bahia (from 0.8% to -0.1%), São Paulo (from 0.8% to % -0.1%), Mato Grosso (from -0.1% to -0.9%), Santa Catarina (from 4.2% to 3.6%), the Northeast Region (from 0.2% to ) and Rio de Janeiro (from 1.8% to 1.2%) had the main rate reductions between December 2018 and January 2019, while Paraná (from 1.9% to 2.6% ), Espírito Santo (from -0.9% to -0.2%) and Goiás (from -4.4% to -4.2%) recorded gains between the two periods.
