PNAD COVID19: 5.2% of the employed population were away from work due to social distancing in the second week of August

The proportion fell over the previous week (5.7%) and also over the first week of the survey, May 3 to 9 (19.8%). 7.6 million students (or 16.6% of the total) did not have school activities this week. This amount reduced in relation to the previous week (8.2 million or 17.9% of the students).

The PNAD COVID19 estimated at 82.1 million the employed population in the country in the week from August 9 to 15, with stability in relation to the previous week (81.6 million persons) and decrease in relation to the week of May 3 to 9 (83.9 million persons).

The employed population and not away from work, estimated at 75.1 million persons, stood stable in relation to the previous week (74.7 million) but increased over the week of May 3 to 9 (63.9 million). Among those persons, 8.3 million (or 11.1% of the employed and not away from work) worked from home. This contingent stood statistically stable over the previous week (8.6 million or 11.5%). Conversely, in relation to the week of May 3 to 9, this contingent was stable in absolute numbers (8.6 million), but fell in percentage terms.

The employment-to-population ratio (48.2%) stood stable over the previous week (47.9%) and fell in relation to the week of May 3 to 9 (49.4%).

The proxy measurement of informal economy (34.1%) stood stable compared to the previous week (34.2%), but retreating over the week of May 3 to 9 (35.7%).

Nearly 4.3 million (or 5.2% of the employed population) were away from work due to social distancing. This contingent stood statistically stable over the previous week (4.7 million), but decreased in percentage terms (5.7% of the employed population). There was both a numerical and percentage decline over the week of May 3 to 9 (16.6 million or 19.8% of the employed).

The unemployed population (12.9 million persons) stood stable over the previous week (12.6 million persons), but surpassed the rate of the week of May 3 to 9 (9.8 million). As a result, the unemployment rate stood at 13.6% in the period from August 9 to 15, stable in relation to the previous week (13.3%) and with a high in relation to the first week of May (10.5%).

The labor force participation rate (55.7%) in the week of August 9 to 15 stood stable in both comparisons: over the previous week (55.3%) and over the first week of May (55.2%).

At the same time, the population out of the workforce (neither working for looking for a job) was of 75.5 million persons, keeping steady over the previous week (76.1 million) and also over the week of May 3 to 9 (76.2 million). In this population, nearly 27.1 million persons (or 35.9% of the population out of the workforce) said they would like to work. This amount fell in relation to the previous week (28.1 million or 36.9%) and stood stable over the week of May 3 to 9 (27.1 million or 35.5%).

Nearly 17.7 million persons out of the force would like to work, but did not go job searching either because of the pandemic or because they did not find a job in their neighborhood.  They corresponded to 23.5% of the persons out of the force. This contingent remained stable in relation to the previous week (18.3 million or 24.1%), but fell over the week of May 3 to 9 (19.1 million of 25.1%).

7.6 million students did not have school activities during the week

In the week of 9 to 15 of August, the country had nearly 45.8 million students attending schools or universities. Of them, 16.6% (or 7.6 million) did not have school activities during the second week of August. This amount fell in relation to the previous week (8.2 million or 17.9% of the students) and also stood stable over the week of June 28 to July 4 (9.0 million or 20.0% of the students).

Among the 36.8 million students that had school activities during the second week of August, 24.3 million (or 66.0%) had them five days a week. In numbers, this contingent grew over the previous week (22.6 million) although the proportion (64.4%) has kept stable.

Around 86.4 million persons stood home and only left it for basic needs in the week of August 9 to 15, which is equivalent to 40.9% of the population. This contingent was reduced in relation to the previous week (89.1 million or 42.2% of the population). The share of the population which was strictly isolated (21.0% or 44.4 million) remained stable, as well as of those that did not adopt any restriction (2.1% or 4.4 million). The number of those that reduced contact but kept getting out from home or receiving visitors (74.5 million or 35.3%) grew in relation to the previous week (71.6 million or 33.9%).

2.7 million persons with flu-like symptoms sought health care units

In the week of August 9 to 15, PNAD COVID19 estimated that 12.0 million persons (or 5.7% of the country's population) had at least one of the 12 symptoms associated to the flu syndrome (fever, cough, sore throat, breathing difficulties, headache, chest pain, nausea, runny or stuffy nose, loss of smell or taste and muscle pain) which are investigated by the survey. This contingent was reduced in relation to the previous week (13.0 million or 6.2% of the employed population) and over the week of May 3 to 9 (26.8 million or 12.7%).

Nearly 2.7 million persons (or 22.8% of those with any of the symptoms) sought care in public health facilities (health centers, family-health programs, UPA-Emergency Care Units, SUS Emergency Rooms or Hospitals or else, private hospitals, ERs or doctor´s offices or outpatient clinics).  This contingent had decrease in number (3.2 million) but stability in percentage terms (24.3%) over the previous week. IN relation to the week of May 3 to 9 (3.7 million or 13.7%), there was decrease in absolute numbers and increase in percentage terms.

In the week of August 9 to 15, 308 thousand persons (11.3%) that had flu-like symptoms sought for care in private or military doctor's offices or outpatient clinics. There was decrease in absolute numbers and increase in percentage terms over the previous week (223 thousand or 7.0%). Against the first week of May (320 thousand or 8.7%), there was stability in the rate and in the absolute contingent.

Nearly 669 thousand persons sought care in public, private or military hospitals in the week of June August 9 to 15.   This contingent fell over the previous week (974 thousand) and over the week of May 3 to 9 (1.1 million).

Among those who sought for care in hospitals, 116 thousand (17.4%) were hospitalized, showing stability over the previous week (136 thousand or 14.0%) and over the week of May 3 to 9 (97 thousand or 9.1%).
