* Seasonally-adjusted series

In the seasonally-adjusted series, o growth of 8.9% in the industrial activity between May and June 2020 showed  widespread positive figures, reaching 14 out of the 15 places surveyed. The behavior reflected that the producers are increasingly returning – albeit partially – their productive units that interrupted the operations due to the effects caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Amazonas (65.7%) and Ceará (39.2%) registered the biggest advances, both of them recording the second consecutive positive rate and accruing gains of 95.1% and 42.5% in this period, respectively. Rio Grande do Sul (12.6%), São Paulo (10.2%) and Santa Catarina (9.1%) also expanded more intensively than the national average (8.9%), whereas the Northeast Region (8.0%), Minas Gerais (5.8%), Paraná (5.2%), Pernambuco (3.5%), Pará (2.8%), Goiás (0.7%), Rio de Janeiro (0.7%), Bahia (0.6%) and Espírito Santo (0.4%) were the other places that posted positive indexes this month.

On the other hand, Mato Grosso (-0.4%) registered the only negative figure in June 2020, thus eliminating a small part of the growth of 3.6% reported last May.

Still concerning the seasonally-adjusted series, the moving average index declined 1.8% in the quarter ending in June 2020 over the previous month, and maintained the predominantly downward trend started in October 2019.

Ten out of the 15 places surveyed recorded negative rates this month, highlighted by the steeper declines in Espírito Santo (-9.9%), Bahia (-7.6%), the Northeast Region (-5.2%), Rio de Janeiro (-3.8%), São Paulo (-3.5%), Ceará (-3.0%) and Paraná (-1.9%). In contrast, Pará (2.0%), Goiás (1.9%) and Rio Grande do Sul (1.1%) posted the major advances.

In the comparison with the same month of the previous year, the industrial sector reduced 9.0% in June 2020, showing negative figures in 12 out of the 15 places surveyed. Despite the positive calendar effect, since June 2020 (21 days) had two more business days than the same month last year (19), the lower pace of the industrial production remained, still influenced by the effects of social distancing that affected the operation of a number of productive units in Brazil.

Espírito Santo (-32.4%) and Ceará (-22.1%) registered the most intense declines. Bahia (-14.4%), the Northeast Region (-13.0%), Santa Catarina (-12.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (-12.2%), São Paulo (-11.8%) and Amazonas (-10.4%) also recorded higher losses than the industry average (-9.0%), whereas Pará (-8.0%), Paraná (-6.8%), Minas Gerais (-6.0%) and Rio de Janeiro (-0.4%) were the other places with dropping output in the monthly index of June 2020.

On the other hand, Goiás (5.4%) posted the most intense advance this month. Pernambuco (2.8%) and Mato Grosso (1.6%) were the other positive rates this month.

On a quarterly basis, the industrial sector retreated 19.4% in the second quarter of 2020, the most intense drop since the beginning of the time series in this type of comparison, remaining negative since the last quarter of 2018 (-1.3%), all of them compared with the same period a year ago.

The loss in the production output stepped up between the first (-1.6%) and the second quarter of 2020 (-19.4%) in 13 out of the 15 places surveyed, highlighted by Ceará (from -1.4% to -42.4%), Amazonas (from -0.9% to -38.9%), the Northeast Region (from 4.4% to -23.3%), Bahia (from 6.9% to -20.5%), São Paulo (from -2.5% to -24.0%), Paraná (from 2.5% to -18.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (from -5.1% to -25.4%), Pernambuco (from 5.8% to -13.4%), Santa Catarina (from -5.2% to -24.3%), Espírito Santo (from -12.3% to -29.8%) and Rio de Janeiro (from 10.0% to -5.3%). In contrast, Goiás (from -1.2% to 2.3%) registered the major gain between the two periods.

In the cumulative index in the year, compared with 2019, 13 out of the 15 places surveyed decreased, highlighted by Ceará (-22.0%), Espírito Santo (-20.8%) and Amazonas (-19.6%). Rio Grande do Sul (-15.8%), Santa Catarina (-15.0%), São Paulo (-14.2%) and Minas Gerais (-11.0%) recorded sharper negative rates than the national average (-10.9%), whereas the Northeast (-9.5%), Paraná (-8.6%), Bahia (-7.3%), Pernambuco (-3.6%), Mato Grosso (-3.3%) and Pará (-0.8%) were the other places with dropping production in the cumulative index in the year.

On the other hand, Rio de Janeiro (2.3%) and Goiás (0.9%) posted the advances in the cumulative index between January and June 2020.

Having registered a reduction of 5.6% in June 2020, the cumulative index over the last 12 months recorded the biggest retreat since December 2016 (-6.4%) and remained increasing its loss against the results of previous months. Twelve out of the 15 places posted negative rates in June 2020, and ten stepped up their drops against May. Ceará (from -8.0% to -9.7%), Espírito Santo (from -18.0% to -19.6%), Amazonas (from -4.1% to -5.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (from -7.7% to -8.9%), Pará (from 1.4% to 0.4%), Santa Catarina (from -6.6% to -7.5%) and São Paulo (from -6.0% to -6.6%) registered the major losses between May and June 2020, whereas Mato Grosso (from -4.5% to -3.2%), Goiás (from 1.4% to 2.2%) and Pernambuco (from -4.5% to -3.9%) recorded the major gains in the period.
