2.8 million persons with flu-like symptoms sought health care between May 31 and June 6

This amount decreased in relation to the previous week (3.6 million) and over the first week of the PNAD COVID19, from May 3 to 9 (3.7 million).

In the week between May 31 and June 6, PNAD COVID19 from the IBGE estimated that 15.8 million persons (or 7.5% of the country's population) had at least one of the 12 symptoms related to the flu syndrome (fever, cough, sore throat, breathing difficulties, headache, chest pain, nausea, stuffy or runny nose, fatigue, eye pain, loss of smell or taste and muscle pain) which are investigated by the survey. This contingent decreased compared to the previous week (22.1 million or 10.5% of the population) and the one from May 3 to 9 (26.8 million or 12.7%).

Approximately 2.8 million persons (or 17.5% of those who had any symptoms) sought health facilities in search of medical care (health centers, family-health programs, UPA-Emergency Care Units, SUS Emergency Rooms or Hospitals or private outpatient clinics/doctor's offices, emergency rooms or hospitals). This contingent fell in relation to the previous week (3.6 million or 16.4%) and, also, compared to the week of May 3 to 9 (3.7 million or 13.7%). More than 85% of those searches were in the public health system.

Approximately 943,000 persons sought care in a public, private or military hospital in the week of May 31 to June 6. This contingent was statistically stable compared to the previous week (1.084 million) and, also, compared to the week of May 3 to 9 (1.065 million). Among those who sought care, 121 thousand (12.8%) were hospitalized. In this case, there was also stability compared to the previous week (127 thousand or 11.7%) and the week from 3 to 9 May (97 thousand or 9.1%).

PNAD COVID19 estimated the employed population in the country at 83.7 million in the week from May 31 to June 6 with stability in relation to the previous week (84.4 million persons) and in relation to the week of May 3 to 9 (83.9 million persons). Among the 67.3 million of employed persons on duty, 8.9 million (or 13.2%) worked from home, a contingent that was statistically stable in relation to the previous week (8.8 million or 13.2%) and also in relation to the week of 3 to May 9 (8.6 million or 13.4%).

The employment-population ratio was 49.3%, remaining stable compared to the previous week (49.7%) and the week of May 3 to 9 (49.4%). The informality rate proxy reached 35.6%, growing compared to the previous week (34.5%) and remaining statistically stable (35.7%) compared to the week of May 3 to 9.

About 13.5 million (16.1% of the employed population) were away from work due to social distancing. This contingent had a reduction in relation to the previous week (14.6 million or 17.2% of the employed population) and also compared to the week of May 3 to 9 (16.6 million or 19.8% of the employed).

The unemployed population reached 11.2 million persons and remained statistically stable compared to the previous week (10.9 million), but grew in relation to the week of May 3 to 9 (9.8 million).

The population out of the workforce (who was neither working nor looking for work) was 75.0 million persons, with statistical stability in relation to the previous week (74.6 million) and decrease in relation to the week from 3 to 9 May (76.2 million). In this population, about 26.8 million persons (or 35.8% of the population out of the workforce) said that they would like to work. This contingent grew in relation to the previous week (25.7 million or 34.4%) and was statistically stable in relation to the week of May 3 to 9.

About 17.9 million persons out of the workforce who would like to work but did not seek work, did not do so because of the pandemic or because they did not find a job in the locality where they lived. They corresponded to 66.8% of the non-employed person who did not look for work but would like to work. This contingent was statistically stable in relation to the previous week (17.7 million or 68.9%) and decreased compared to the week of May 3 to 9 (19.1 million or 70.7%).
