The IBGE releases today the 2019 version of the Map of Geographical Indications in Brazil, result from a partnership with the National Institute of Industrial Property - INPI. The map brings information on the Stamps of Geographical Indications, locating the regions of origin of products and services certified as Indication of Origin and/or Appellation of Origin. The 2019 version gained four new products, raising to 62 the Geographical Indications certified in Brazil up to May 2019. The map is produced in the 1:5,000,000 scale (where 1 cm = 50 km) and can be accessed on the right side of this page.

The 2019 version of the Map of Geographic Indications in Brazil included four new products. Three of them received stamps of Indication of Origin: derivatives from jabuticaba de Sabará (MG), cacao from Tomé-Açu (PA) and green coffee from the west of Bahia (BA). Bananas from Corupá (SC) received the stamp of Appellation of Origin.

The Geographical Indication is used to establish the origin of products and services whenever that place becomes well-known or whenever a certain characteristic or quality of the product or service is due to its origin. It provides consumers with reliable information on the quality and authenticity of what they are acquiring. Such type of certification also treasures the local culture and fosters tourist activities.

Other products benefited from previous versions of the Map were the wines and sparkling wines from the Valley of Vinhedos (RS), shrimp from Costa Negra (CE) and honey from Ortigueira (PR), which hold the stamp of Appellation of Origin. Laces from Divina Pastora (SE) and from Cariri (PB), as well as brandies from Paraty (RJ), Salinas (MG) and Abaíra (BA), tin crafts from São João Del-Rei (MG), opals and craft jewels from Pedro II (PI), honey from Pantanal (MT/MS), red propolis from the mangrove forests of Alagoas (CE) and clay pans from Goiabeiras (ES) have the Indication of Origin.

Distributed along all the Brazilian regions, the Geographical Indications were established by local associations, unions and producers cooperatives and are certified by the INPI. The INPI´s Stamp of Geographical Indication is regulated by the Law of Intellectual Property no. 9,279 and may assume either of two models: Indication of Origin - IP (article 177) and Appellation of Origin - DO (article 178).
