The IBGE releases on Tuesday, October 30, volumes 35 and 37 of the Surveying of Natural Resources series of the RADAMBRASIL project. In digital format (on the right side of this page), the publications bring information on geology, geomorphology, pedology (soils), vegetation and potential use of land, related to two quadrants of the Geological Chart of Brazil to the Millionth.

On the same day, the VI Memory Panel on the RADAM/RADAMBRASIL project will be held, aiming at stimulating the discussion and reflection on one of the major milestones of the geosciences in Brazil. Available on the right side of this page, the book Desbravar, conhecer, mapear: memórias do Projeto RADAM/RADAMBRASIL (Pioneering, knowing, mapping: memories of the RADAM/RADAMBRASIL Project) will be launched during the event.

The President of the IBGE, Roberto Olinto Ramos, the Director of Geosciences, João Bosco de Azevedo, and IBGE technicians who worked on the project will be present in the event, which will be held at 2pm in the Auditorium of the IBGE´s Center for Information Dissemination and Documentation (706 General Canabarro Street, Maracanã).

Released today, the volumes 35 and 37 of the Surveying of Natural Resources Series (RADAMBRASIL) bring information on Sheets SG.22 CURITIBA and SF.22 PARANAPANEMA, respectively, of the Geological Chart of Brazil to the Millionth. These publications comprise a set of 38 volumes covering the themes geology, geomorphology, pedology (soils), vegetation and potential use of land. The IBGE currently works on the last two volumes of the series.

The round table of the VI IBGE Memory Panel will have Pedro Edson Leal Bezerra, Ricardo Forim Lisboa Braga and Trento Natali Filho, who worked on RADAMBRASIL, as well as the exhibition of videos with interviews and images of the project. The event aims at recognizing and valuing the work performed by a significant number of professionals, whose services were of most relevance to Brazil.

The RADAM project – Radar on Amazon – was created in 1970, prioritizing the data collection on mineral resources, soil, vegetation, land use and cartography of the Amazon and neighbor areas in the Northeast Region. In 1975, the surveying was expanded to the rest of the national territory, aiming at the integrated mapping of the natural resources and being called of RADAMBRASIL Project.

Carried out in the 1970s and 1980s, the IBGE technicians consider this project one of the biggest advances in getting to know the Brazilian natural resources, pioneering the use of radar images to evaluate the geology, geomorphology, pedology (soils), vegetation and potential use of land in the entire national territory. Along these years, the RADAMBRASIL reports were key to the analysis, assessment and zoning, among other studies involving the understanding of the Brazilian natural environment.
