The National Conference of Data Producers and Users, organized by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) shows significant evolution between the editions of 2024 and 2025.
In 2025, the Conference has an unprecedented dimension: for the first time since its creation in 1968, it will be held out of Rio de Janeiro, and lands in Salvador, Bahia, from December 3 to 5, at the facilities of SENAI Cimatec and SESI, with support from the Federation of Industries of the State of Bahia (FIEB) and Bahia State Government. The topic will be “A Proposed General Plan for Statistical and Geographic Information for Brazil's Development in the Digital Age for the period between 2026 and 2030”.
The effort to hold the event in Bahia means decentering and expansion of the national debate. The 2025 edition , so far, has 76 activities — 22 panels, 37 thematic groups and 17 workshops, which are innovations from the previous edition. Participation of 193 lecturers, 59 moderators and 29 reporters is confirmed, which makes this edition the greatest ever organized.
In 2024, in Rio de Janeiro, the meeting, held at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), had as theme as “National Sovereignty in Geosciences, Statistics and Data: risks and opportunities for Brazil in the Digital Age.” It offered 29 activities distributed among 6 panels and 23 thematic groups, 26 moderators and 12 reporters. The event dealt with the challenges to national sovereignty before digitization and the growing dependence of global data. The Conference held at UERJ had as the main product the letter of Brazil in the Digital Age with proposals for the collective construction of the National System of Geosciences, Statistics and Data (SINGED).
Besides the quantitative increase, the meeting in Salvador marks the restart of the PGIEG elaboration. The plan is considered essencial for the strategy and planning of official information, reinforcing the role of the IBGE as protagonist of governance of geosciences and statistics.
So, while the 2024 edition focused in discussing risks and opportunities of national sovereignty in the digital age, the current edition stands out for the coverage, decentering and concrete proposal of a strategic plan to guide Brazil in the use of statistical and geographic information until 2030.
Being close to the celebration of its 90th anniversary, the IBGE reinforces, with this conference, its international relevance, as it invites producers and users of data from all over the world to discuss how past and present information can prepare the future of Brazil in the digital age.
