The national output of industry recorded an increase of 0.2%, with positive increases in eight of the 14 areas surveyed, from October to November 2017, in the seasonally adjusted series. The most significant increases came from Espírito Santo (5.8%), with its second consecutive result and a cumulative increase of 7.0%; Bahia (3.5%), which made up for part of the cumulative loss of 8.0% recorded in September and October; Pernambuco (2.6%), which recorded increase once more after two months of decrease in a row, and Minas Gerais (2.4%), which reversed part of the 3.4% decrease recorded between July and October 2017.

Rio Grande do Sul (1.4%), Pará (1.1%), São Paulo (0.7%) and Northeast Region (0.2%) complete the group of areas with positive indexes in November 2017. On the other hand, the most significant negative results in the month were those of Amazonas (-3.7%), which reversed the increase of 3.7% recorded in October; Rio de Janeiro (-2.9%), which eliminated part of the cumulative expansion of 13.3% in the period August-October; and Ceará (-2.3%) having increased again by 1.1% in October, when it interrupted a series of four consecutive months of output decrease. The other negative rates were those of Paraná (-0.9%), Goiás (-0.6%) and Santa Catarina (-0.1%). The complete publication is available here.

* Seasonally-adjusted series

Also in the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index for the industry overall increased by 0.3% in the quarter that ended in November 2017, against the figure in the previous year and has remained on an upward trend since April 2017. IN regional terms, also in the seasonally adjusted series, seven areas had positive rates, the main highlights being Rio de Janeiro (2.1%) and Espírito Santo (1.2%). On the other hand, Bahia (-1.6%) and Ceará (-0.8%) faced the most significant decreases in November 2017.

Against the same month in 2016, industry recorded a decrease of 4.7% in November 2017, with 14 of the 15 areas surveyed recording positive results. Goiás (17.0%) and Pará (10.7%) recorded the most significant increases, mainly due to the advances observed in the sectors of food products (crystallized sugar, UHT/Long Life milk, refined soybean oil, powdered milk, fresh or cooled beef), coke, petroleum products and biofuels and motor vehicles, trailers and trunks (cars), in Goiás; and mining and quarrying industry (crude or processed iron ore), no Pará.

Santa Catarina (8.0%), São Paulo (7.1%) and Rio de Janeiro (5.6%) also recorded positive rates above the national average (4.7%), whereas Ceará (3.5%), Paraná (3.2%), Mato Grosso (3.1%), Northeast Region (2.5%), Minas Gerais (2.5%), Pernambuco (2.1%), Espírito Santo (1.7%), Bahia (0.8%) and Amazonas (0.6%) completed the group of areas with output increase in the month.

On the other hand, Rio Grande do Sul (-0,2%) recorded the only decrease in November 2017, mainly due to the decrease in the activity of machinery and equipment.

Regarding the cumulative figure in January-November 2017, 12 of the 15 areas surveyed recorded increase against the same period a period ago, with Pará (10.5%) as the main highlight. Paraná (4.8%), Goiás (4.6%), Mato Grosso (4.5%), Santa Catarina (4.5%), Rio de Janeiro (3.9%), Amazonas (3.2%), São Paulo (3.0%) and Ceará (2.4%) also recorded increases above the average of industry (2.3%), whereas Espírito Santo (2.3%), Minas Gerais (1.8%) and Rio Grande do Sul (0.5%) completed the group of areas with positive results at the end of the 11 -month period.

In those locations, the increased dynamism was mainly influenced by manufacture of capital goods (mainly those in the transportation sector, for construction and agriculture); intermediate goods (iron ore, petroleum, pulp, basic metals and side products from soybean extraction); durable consumer goods (cars and brown goods); and semi-durable and non-durable consumer goods (footwear, textiles and wearing apparel).

On the other hand, Bahia (-2.7%) accounted for the most significant decrease in the year, mainly due to coke, petroleum products and biofuels (diesel, fuel oils and naphtha for petrochemical industry) and basic metals (copper and copper alloy bars, profiles and rebars). The Northeast Region (-0.5%) and Pernambuco (-0.5%) also recorded negative rates.

The cumulative index in the last twelve months (2.2%) recorded the biggest increase since September 2013 (2.3%) and has been on an upward trend since June 2016 (-9.7%). In regional terms, 13 of the 15 areas surveyed recorded positive rates in November 2017 and 12 had increased dynamism in comparison with the indexes of last October, followed by the movement of national industry, which changed from 1.7% to 2.2%.

The main increases between October and November 2017 came from Goiás (from 1.5% to 3.7%), Santa Catarina (from 3.7% to 4.6%), Pernambuco (from -0.7% to 0.2%), Ceará (from 1.9% to 2.6%), Espírito Santo (from 1.7% to 2.3%), Bahia (from -3.8% to -3.2%) and São Paulo (from 2.2% to 2.7%), whereas Amazonas (from 3.5% to 3.2%) and Paraná (from 5.2% to 4.9%) recorded the biggest decreases between the two periods.
