Industrial employment falls 0.7% in July

In July 2015, the total of salaried employed persons in industry fell 0.7%, over the previous month level, in the seasonally adjusted series. It was the seventh consecutive negative rate, accumulating in this period a loss of 4.8%. With these results, the quarterly moving average decreased 0.9%, in the quarter which ended in July 2015, in comparison with the level reached in the previous month, and has kept the downward trend stared in April 2013. Compared with July 2014, the industrial employment dropped 6.4%, the 46th consecutive negative figure in this type of comparison and the most intense since July 2009 (-6.7%). In the cumulative index in the first seven months of 2015, the total number of employed persons in industry recorded a decline of 5.4%. By declining 4.9% in July 2015, the cumulative index in the last 12 months, kept the downward trend started in September 2013 (-1.0%). The complete publication can be accessed here.

In the comparison with July 2014, the industrial employment shrank 6.4% in July 2015, with the contingent of workers decreasing in 17 of the 18 segments surveyed. The highlights were the negative pressures coming from means de transportation (-11.9%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-15.1%), machinery and equipment (-9.1%), fabricated metal products (-10.7%), foods and beverage (-2.8%), other products of the manufacturing industry (-10.1%), rubber and plastic (-6.0%), footwear and leather (-7.5%), wearing apparel (-5.1%), basic metals (-7.2%), non-metallic mineral products (-4.6%), textiles (-5.4%), paper and press (-4.4%), mining and quarrying (-4.7%) and wood (-6.0%). Conversely, the sector of chemicals (0.0%) was the only one without a negative result this month.

In terms of the cumulative index of the first seven months of the year, the industrial employment recorded decrease of 5.4%, with negative rates in the 18 sectors surveyed. The most relevant negative contributions to the national average came from means of transportation (-10.2%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-12.9%), fabricated metal products (-10.5%), machinery and equipment (-6.8%), food and beverages (-2.3%), other manufactured products (-8.9%), wearing apparel (-5.3%), footwear and leather (-7.5%), basic metals (-6.6%), paper and press (-3.5%), textiles (-3.2%), manufacturing industry (-4.6%), non-metallic mineral products (-2.3%), oil refining and ethanol production (-5.8%) and rubber and plastic (-2.1%).

Number of hours paid changes -1.2% in July

In July 2015, the number of hours paid to industrial workers, discounted the seasonal influences, declined 1.2% over June, the fifth negative rate in a row and a cumulative loss of 4.6% in the period. With these results, the quarterly moving average index recorded reduction of 1.1% in the quarter ended in July 2015 in comparison with the level reached in the previous month and has remained on a downward trend started in May 2013.

In comparison with the July 2014 figure, the number of hours paid to industry workers fell 7.2%, in July 2015, the 26th consecutive negative rate in this type of comparison and the most significant since July 2009 (-7.3%). The cumulative index from January to July 2015 shrank 6.0%. Having changed from -5.3% in June to -5.5% in July, the cumulative index in the last 12 months maintained the downward trend started in September 2013 (-1.0%).

The number of hours paid declined 7.2% when compared with the figure of the same month in the previous year. There was widespread decrease, since all the 18 sectors surveyed recorded reduction. The most relevant negative contributions came from means of transportation (-13.4%), food products and beverages (-3.8%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-14.1%), machinery and equipment (-8.8%), metal products (10.4%), other products from manufacturing industry (-11.0%), rubber and plastic (-8.4%), footwear and leather (-8.7%), wearing apparel (-5.0%), fabricated metal products (-9.4%), textiles (-5.5%), paper and press (-4.7%) and oil refining and ethanol production (-9.7%).

In the cumulative index of the first seven months of 2015, there was decrease of 6.0% in the number of hours paid, with decrease in the 18 sectors surveyed. The most relevant negative impacts on the global average were seen in means of transportation (-10.9%), fabricated metal products (-10.8%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-12.0%), food and beverages (-2.7%), machinery and equipment (-7.7%), other manufactured products (-9.6%), footwear and leather (-9.6%), wearing apparel (-5.0%), basic metals (-8.5%), paper and press (-4.4%), non-metallic mineral products (-3.8%), rubber and plastic (-3.7%) and oil refining and ethanol production (-8.7%).

Value of the real payroll falls 1.8% in July

In July 2015, the value of the real payroll of the industry workers (seasonally adjusted) contracted 1.8% compared with the immediately previous month, eliminating part of the expansion of 1.3% registered in June. In this month index, there is negative influence coming both from the mining and quarrying sector (-22.3%), which offset part of the expansion of 31.2% seen in the previous month due to the profit sharing and results of an important enterprise of the sector, and from the manufacturing industry (-0.4%), which kept reporting negative rates for the seventh month in a row. With these results, the quarterly moving average decreased 1.5%, in the quarter which ended in July 2015, in comparison with the level reached in the previous month, and has kept the downward trend stared in last February.

In the comparison with July 2014, the value of the real payroll reduced 7.0% in July 2015 - the 14th consecutive negative rate in this type of comparison. In the cumulative index over the seven months of 2015, the value of the real payroll of the industry registered a decrease of 6.3%. The cumulative rate in the last 12 months, showing reduction of 5.0% in July 2015, posted the most intense negative result since October 2003 (-5.2%) and kept the downward trend stated in January 2014 (1.6%).

In the comparison with the same month a year ago, the value of the real payroll posted decrease of 7.0% in July 2015, with negative results in the 18 segments surveyed, with a highlight to machinery and equipment (-11.6%), means of transportation (-6.4%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-13.2%), food and beverages (-3.9%), basic metals (-11.1%), fabricated metal products (-10.2%), rubber and plastic (-10.1%), other manufactures products (-12.5%), mining and quarrying industries (-6.6%), footwear and leather (-9.9%), textiles (-8.1%), paper and press (-4.4%) and oil refining and ethanol production (-7.6%).

In the cumulative index over the seven months of 2015, the value of the real payroll recorded reduction of 6.3%, with negative rates in the 18 activities surveyed, pushed mostly by the drops coming from means of transportation (-11.2%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-11.6%), machinery and equipment (-6.1%), fabricated metal products (-10.7%), food and beverages (-3.3%), basic metals (-9.5%), mining and quarrying industries (-6.6%), rubber and plastic (-5.3%), other manufactured products (-8.1%), footwear and leather (-9.5%), oil refining and ethanol production (-6.4%) and paper and press (-2.2%).
