The unemployment rate of April 2015 was estimated at 6.4% for the group of six metropolitan areas surveyed, being stable in comparison with the March figure (6.2%). In comparison with the result of April 2014, the rate was 1.5 percentage points higher (with a change from 4.9% to 6.4%). The unemployed population (1.6 million persons) did not record change versus the March figure. Versus April 2014, there was rise (32.7%, with 384 thousand persons more). The employed population was estimated at 22.8 million for the group of six metropolitan areas, reflecting stability in terms of monthly and annual analyses. The number of workers with an employment record card signed in the private sector (11.5 million) was stable in the monthly comparison. In comparison with the result of April 2014, there was retraction of 1.9% (219 thousand persons). The average usual real earnings of workers was estimated at R$ 2,138.50. This result was 0.5% lower than that of March (R$ 2,148.71) and 2.9% lower than that of April 2014 (R$ 2,202.08). The usual real wage bill of employed persons was estimated at R$ 49.3 billion in April 2015, recording decrease of 0.5% in relation to March. In the annual comparison this estimate decreased 3.8%. The actual real wage bill of the employed population (R$ 49.7 billion), estimated in March 2015, fell 1.5% and 3.9 in comparison with the results of February and March 2014, respectively. The Monthly Employment Survey is conducted in the metropolitan areas of Recife, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Porto Alegre. The monthly analysis by metropolitan area showed that none of the areas recorded changes in unemployment rate in comparison with March figures. In comparison with April 2014, the rate in Salvador changed from 9.1% to 11.3% (+2.2 percentage points); in Belo Horizonte, from 3.6% to 5.5% (+ 1.9 percentage points); in Porto Alegre from 3.2% to 5.0% (+ 1.8 percentage points); in Rio de Janeiro, from 3.5% to 5.2% (+1.7 percentage points); in Recife, from 6.3% to 7.8% (+1.5 percentae points) and in São Paulo from 5.2% to 6.3% (+1.1 percentage points).

The number of unemployed persons was estimated at 1.6 million persons in the group of six areas surveyed, without any change in relation to March. Versus April 2014, there was increase (32.7%, with 384 thousand persons more). In the analysis by area, the number of unemployed persons, in comparison with that of last March remained stable. In comparison with April last year, unemployment increased as follows: Porto Alegre (61.6%); Belo Horizonte (51.1%); Rio de Janeiro (49.5%); Salvador (27.4%); Recife (26.1%) and São Paulo (22.8%).

Employment population ratio was stable at 52.2%

The employment population ratio (proportion of employed persons in relation to those at active age) was estimated at 52.2% in the group of six metropolitan areas, not presenting any significant change in relation to last March. Versus April 2014 (53.6%), this indicator fell by 0.8 percentage points. By area, in the monthly comparison, there was not any significant change 2012. The comparison with the April 2014 result shows decrease in two areas: Belo Horizonte and Rio de Janeiro (1.8 and 1.1 percentage points, respectively.)

Annual comparison shows decrease of real earnings in all the areas

Versus March figures, earnings declined in Recife (-4.9%); Rio de Janeiro(-1.4%); Salvador (-1.0%) and Belo Horizonte (-0.5%). Stability was observed in Porto Alegre and increase (0.6%), in São Paulo. In comparison with April 2014, earnings fell in all the metropolitan areas: Salvador (-5.5%); Belo Horizonte (-4.1%); Recife and Rio de Janeiro (-2.7% in each); São Paulo (-2.6%) and Porto Alegre (-1.9%).

In the classification by groups of activity, for the total of six areas, the biggest decrease in the average usual real earnings, both in the monthly (-4.0%) and in the annual comparison (-7.5%) was recorded by Construction. Both comparisons point to decrease in most groups surveyed.

In the classification by categories of employment type, the biggest decrease in the average usual real earnings in comparison with the March 2015 figure occurred among workers without a formal employment contract in the private sector (-4.2%), but there were also losses in the other categories, except military and civil servants (0.4%). In relation to April 2014, decline was observed among workers without a formal employment contract in the private sector (-3.0%), self-employed persons (-2.8%) and workers with a formal employment contract in the private sector (-2.6%).
