Unemployment rate was 4.7% in October

The unemployment rate in October was estimated at 4.7%, with no significant change in comparison with September (4.9%). In comparison with October 2013 (5.2%), the rate fell 0.5 percentage points.  The unemployed population (1.1 million persons) was stable in relation to the September figure and fell 10.1% versus that of October 2013.  The employed population (23.3 million) recorded increase of 0.8% in relation to September and was stable over that of October last year. The non-economically-active population was estimated at 19.0 million, remaining stable in relation to September and increasing 3.3% in comparison with October 2013.  The number of workers with a formal contract in the private sector (11.7 million) remained unchanged both in comparison with September 2014 and with October 2013. The figure for average usual real earnings of the employed population (R$ 2,122.10) was 2.3% above that of the previous month (R$ 2,075.39) and 4.0% bigger the amount recorded in October 2013 (R$ 2.041.10). The  volume of average usual real earnings  (R$ 50.1 billion) in October 2014 recorded a hike of 3.1% in relation to last September and of 3.8% in comparison with October last year. The volume of real earnings of the employed population (R$ 50.3 billion in September 2014) increased 2.9% in comparison with August 2014 and 4.4% in comparison with September 2013.

The Monthly Employment Survey is conducted in the metropolitan areas of Recife, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Porto Alegre. The complete publication is available at

Unemployment falls in Salvador and remains stable in the other areas

By area, the monthly analysis showed that the unemployment in Salvador fell 1.8 percentage points (from 10.3% to 8.¨%), but did ot change in the other metropolitan areas. In comparison with October 2013, the rate rose 1.6 percentage points in Porto Alegre (from 3.0% to 4.6%) and feel 1.2 percentage points in São Paulo (from 5.6% to 4.4%). In the other areas no significant change was observed.

 The number of unemployed persons, in October 2014, was estimated at 1.1 million persons in the group of six areas surveyed, without any change in comparison with the September figure. Versus October 2013, there was decrease (-10.1%). In the analysis by area, the number of unemployed persons, in comparison with that of September, recorded decrease in Salvador (-18.4%), having remained stable in the other areas. In comparison with October 2013, unemployment rose 55.4% in Porto Alegre and fell in São Paulo (-22.7%) and in Belo Horizonte (-16.7%).

Employment population ratio stays at 53.6%

The employment population ratio (proportion of employed persons in relation to those at working age) was estimated at 53.6% in October 2014, for the group of six metropolitan areas surveyed, having recorded hike of 0.4 percentage points in comparison with October last year (54.2%). In regional terms, in the monthly comparison, there was stability in all the areas. Versus October last year, this indicator fell 1.9 percentage points (from 56.5% to 54.6%) in Belo Horizonte, and rose 1.6 percentage points (from 52.0% to 53.6%) in Salvador.

The analysis of the number of employed persons by group of activity from September to October 2014 showed stability in all the groups. Compared with October last year, there was a 4.0% decrease in Trade and increase of 4.4% in Other services.

In the annual comparison, average earnings increase in all the six areas surveyed

In regional terms, in relation to September, earnings increased in Salvador (9.7%), Belo Horizonte (4.6%), Rio de Janeiro (0.8%) and São Paulo (2.8%); they recorded decrease in Porto Alegre (-1.8%) and recorded no change in Recife. In comparison with October 2013, earnings rose in all the areas, the main highlights being Rio de Janeiro (8.6%) and Recife (8.4%).

In the classification by employment type, for the group of six metropolitan areas, the biggest increase in the average usual real earnings in relation to that of September 2014 was recorded in Industry (6.4%). No group recorded decrease and Education, Health, Public Administration remained stable. In the anual comparison, there was increase in all the groups, being Industry (6.1%) the most significant one.

In the classification byemployment type, the biggest increase in the average usual real earnings was observed among self-employed persons, both in the monthly and in the annual comparison (5.2% and 6.0%, respectively). Military and civil servants presented recorded decrease in the monthly comparison (-1.5%) and, in the annual comparison, persons employed in the private sector had stable earnings.
