IBGE releases unemployment rate in four metropolitan areas

IBGE releases today, June 26, 2014, the results of the Monthly Employment Survey (PME), relating to the month of May 2014, for the metropolitan areas of Recife, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.

As an exception, data for the metropolitan areas of Salvador and Porto Alegre are not available. The complete publication in the date scheduled in the publishing calendar was not possible due to delays in the phases of data collection, calculation, edition, analysis and quality assessment, as a result of the strike of IBGE´s servants. The complete data of May will be released on a later date, including the data of the metropolitan areas of Salvador and Porto Alegre.

Encompassing the metropolitan areas of Recife, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Porto Alegre, the Monthly Employment Survey produces monthly indicators on the workforce, which allow to assess the fluctuation and the medium and long term trends of the labor market in these areas. It is a quick indicator of the effects of the economic situation over this market, besides addressing other important needs for the socioeconomic planning of Brazil. The survey includes information on activity status, employment status, nominal and real average income, employment type and ownership of formal contract, among others, using the households as collection units.

Unemployment remains stable in four metropolitan areas

In regional terms, the unemployment rate remained stable in the four metropolitan areas in May 2014 over the last month. In relation to May 2013, the rate declined 1.8 percentage points in Rio de Janeiro and 1.2 percentage points in São Paulo. The rate remained stable in Recife and Belo Horizonte.

Compared with last April, the contingent of unemployed persons remained stable in all the metropolitan areas in May 2014. Compared with May 2013, the rate fell 34.8% in the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro, 21.7% in São Paulo and remained stable in Recife and Belo Horizonte. 

Jobs with formal contract increase in São Paulo over May 2013

Considering the employment type, the employed population with a formal contract in the private sector remained stable in the four metropolitan areas in May 2014 against April. Compared with May 2013, the metropolitan area of São Paulo increased 3.7% and the other areas remained stable. In the monthly comparison, the number of employees without a formal contract in the private sector increased 13.5% in Recife and remained stable in the other three areas. Compared with May 2013, São Paulo dropped 22.5% and Belo Horizonte, 11.8%.

Domestic services fall in Recife and Belo Horizonte in relation to May 2013

Considering the classification by groups of activity, domestic services in Recife dropped 12.2% in May 2014 over April and 17.5% in relation to May 2013. In the same group, Belo Horizonte registered a drop of 8.8% compared with May 2013. The other groups of activity remained stable in both comparisons in the four metropolitan areas.

Real average income falls in Recife and Belo Horizonte and rises in Rio de Janeiro

Between April and May 2013, the real average income dropped in the metropolitan areas of Recife (-1.1%) and Belo Horizonte (-1.4%) and rose in the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro (2.9%), remaining stable in São Paulo. Compared with May 2013, the real average income rose in Recife (8.4%), Rio de Janeiro (7.4%) and São Paulo (1.7%) and dropped 1.6% in Belo Horizonte.
