The rising pace of the national industrial output, between May and June, in the seasonally adjusted series, was also observed in the areas, since ten of the 14 places surveyed posted output expansion. The sharpest gains were seen in Pará (5.9%), Rio Grande do Sul (3.9%), Bahia (3.1%), Santa Catarina (2.9%), São Paulo (2.9%) and Rio de Janeiro (2.3%). The Northeast region (1.8%), Ceará (1.7%), Pernambuco (1.5%) and Espírito Santo (1.2%) close the set of places with positive rates, although less intense than the national average (1.9%). Paraná, falling 3.0%, posted the sharpest drop, offsetting part of the 7.4% cumulative expansion from March to May.  The other negative rates were recorded in Goiás (-2.3%), Amazonas (-2.3%) and Minas Gerais (-0.8%).

Over results of the same month a year ago, the industrial sector grew 3.1% in June 2013, with nine of the 14 areas surveyed recording expansion. This month, the highest positive rates occurred in Rio Grande do Sul (11.8%) and Bahia (9.9%), affected by the positive performance of machinery and equipment (metallic silos, non-electric industrial ovens, harvesting machines and air-conditioning appliances for central use), petroleum refining and alcohol production (automotive gasoline and diesel) and motor vehicles (cars), in the former, and petroleum refining and alcohol production (diesel, gasoline, alcohol and aviation kerosene), chemical products (thermoplastic resins) and metallurgy (bars, profiles and copper rebars), in the latter. Rio de Janeiro (5.2%), Pernambuco (4.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (4.3%), Rio de Janeiro (3.0%), Northeast Region (4.5%), Paraná (4.4%), Pernambuco (3.6%), São Paulo (3.1%), Ceará 92.4%) and Goiás (2.4%) complete the group of areas which recorded positive rates in the month. Pará (-7.0%) and Espírito Santo (-6.0%) recorded the most significant negative rates in terms of the monthly index, affected by the decreases observed in metallurgy (aluminum oxide) in Pará industry, and food products and beverages (sausages and cured products and candy bars) and metallury (carbon steel ingots, blocks, rods and plates), in Espírito Santo. The other negative rates were registered in Minas Gerais (-1.4%), Amazonas (-0.6%) and Santa Catarina (-0.2%).

Also in the series with seasonal adjustment, the evolution of the quarterly moving average index for the industry overall showed slight change of 0.6% in the quarter which ended in June, over the previous month. This was the most significant increase since August last year (0.7%) and mantained the upward trend which started in December. In regional terms, also considering the marginal movement of the index, nine of the 14 areas recorded positive rates in June 2013, and the main highlights were: Bahia (2.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (1.8%), Pernambuco (1.7%), Pará (1.6%), Minas Gerais (1.0%) and Northeast Region (0.9%). Amazonas (-1.0%), Goiás (-0.8%) and Paraná (-0.6%), on the other hand, recorded the most significant decreases in the month. Still in terms of seasonally adjusted series, the quarter on quarter comparison also had a positive performance. The industry overall increased 1.1% in the second quarter of the year, and accelerated over the results of the last quarter of 2012 (0.0%) and of the first three months of 2013 (0.9%). Considering the areas, six of the 14 places surveyed followed this trend and accelerated between the first and the second quarters of 2013. The highlights were: Minas Gerais, with a change from -6.2% to 1.8%, Espírito Santo (from -5.8% to 0.0%), Pará (from -6.4% to -2.9%), Bahia (from -0.4% to 3.1%) and Pernambuco (from 3.1% to 4.4%). Ceará (from 6.2% to -1.6%) recorded the bigest decrease between te two periods.

On a quarterly basis, the industrial sector, having grown 4.3% in the second quarter of 2013, recorded the most significant increase since the third quarter of 2010 (8.0%) and interrupted a sequence of negative results which had started in the last quarter of 2011 (-1.9%), with all comparisons against the equivalent period in the previous year. In terms of areas, from the period January-March to April-June, there was acceleration in 13 of the 14 areas surveyed, the main highlights being: Paraná (from -4.6% to 6.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (from 0.0% to 9.1%), Bahia (from 2.2% to 9.6%), Pernambuco (from -2.6% to 4.3%), Amazonas (from -0.9% to 5.4%), Northeast Region (from -1.0% to 5.2%), Espírito Santo (from -12.0% to -6.7%) and São Paulo (from 0.7% to 5.0%), whereas Pará (from -5.8% to -14.3%) recorded the only deceleration between the two periods.

In terms of the index accumulated in the year, the increase recorded by the national output encompassed ten of the 14 areas surveyed, and seven of them had results above the national average (1.9%): Bahia (5.9%), Rio Grande do Sul (4.7%), São Paulo (2.9%), Ceará (2.7%), Amazonas (2.2%), Goiás (2.0%) and Northeast Region (2.0%). Rio de Janeiro (1.4%), Paraná (0.8%) and Pernambuco (0.6%) completed the group of areas with positive rates, in the first semester of 2013. In these areas, the bigger dynamism was particularly influenced by factors related to the output increase of capital goods and durable consumer goods, besides the sectors of petroleum refining and alcohol production, textiles, footwear and leather articles and food products. Pará (-10.3%) and Espírito Santo (-9.4%) accounted for the most significant losses, reflecting mainly the smallest production of mining and quarrying industry and metallurgy, in the former, and metallurgy and beverages, in the latter. Minas Gerais (-0.7%) and Santa Catarina (-0.5%) also recorded negative results.

The annualized rate, the indicator accumulated in the last 12 months, after having changed 0.2% in June 2013, has remained on an upward trend since December last year (-2.6%) and recorded its first positive result since December 2011 (0.4%). In terms of area, only six of the 14 areas surveyed recorded positive rates in June this year, but 12 of them accelerated in relation to the index of last year, the main highlights being: Rio Grande do Sul, which changed from -2.7% to -1.1%, Bahia (from 4.7% to 5.9%), Rio de Janeiro (from -1.8% to -0.8%), Paraná (from -6.9% to -6.0%) and São Paulo (from -0.4% to 0.5%).
