Unemployment rate: 6.0% in June

The estimated unemployment rate was 6.0%, without any significant change over the May 2013 (5.8%) and June 2012 rates (5.9%). The unemployed population (1.5 million persons) also recorded stability over both May 2013 and June 2012 results. The employed population (23.0 million) did not change significantly in comparison with the months of May 2013 and June 2012. The number of workers with a formal contract in the private sector (11.5 million) remained very close to the result of May 2013 and increased 3.2% over  that of June last year, representing a addition of 359 thousand job posts with a signed employment contract.  An analysis of the employed persons overall by groups of activity, from May to June 2013, highlights the decline of Industry (3.3%), the only group which recorded change.

The average real income usually earned by the employed population (R$ 1,869.20) did not record any change in terms of monthly comparison, and increased 0.8% in comparison with the June 2012 figure (R$ 1,854.13). The volume of real income usually earned (R$ 43.4 billion) was stable when compared to that of May, and is 1.5% up since June 2012. The volume of real income for the same group (43.1 billion in May 2013) has also remained stable since April.  In a comparison with May last year, this estimate increased 2.0%.

Unemployment was stable in all the areas over May figure

The unemployment rate (proportion of unemployed persons in relation to the economically-active population, which is formed by employed and unemployed persons) was estimated at 6.0% for the group of six metropolitan areas surveyed. In the monthly analysis, the unemployment rate did not record an significant change in any of the metropolitan areas surveyed.  There was no significant change over June 2012.  

 

The number of unemployed persons (those without a job who are trying to enter the labor market) in June 2013 was estimated at 1.5 million persons in the group of six metropolitan areas, reflecting stability in the comparison with May and over June last year.  In comparison with June 20012 there was increase of the number of unemployed persons in the metropolitan area of Salvador (23.5% or 34 thousand persons) and stability in the other areas.  

 

Employment level stays at 53.6%  

The employment level (proportion of employed persons in relation to those at active age) was estimated at 53.7% in the group of six metropolitan areas, not presenting any significant change in relation to May 2013. In the comparison with June 2012, this indicator remained unchanged as well. By area, in the monthly comparison, all the areas recorded stability, except Belo Horizonte, where the indicator fell by 0.8 percentage points. In the comparison with June last year, the level of occupation increased 4.4 percentage points in Salvador and faced decrease of 2.1 and 1.9 percentage points, respectively, in Recife and Belo Horizonte. The rate remained unchanged in the other areas.

An analysis of the employed persons overall, by groups of activity, from May to June 2013, highlights the decline of Industry (3.3%), the only group which recorded change. In comparison with June last year, there was increase in Education, health, public administration (6.0%) and decrease in Domestic services (-5.2%), whereas the other groups remained unchanged.  

In the annual comparison, average income increases in three of the six areas

In the analysis by area, the average real income usually earned by the employed population (R$ 1,869.20 in the group of six areas) increased compared with the figure in February in Belo Horizonte (4.7%), São Paulo (2.2%), Porto Alegre (2.2%) and Recife (1.2%) and recorded decline of 05.% in Salvador. It was stable in Rio de Janeiro, and fel in Belo Horizonte (4.0%) and São Paulo (0.6%).  In comparison with June 2012, there was decrease in Belo Horizonte (5.1%), Salvador (4.5%) and Recife (3.2%).  There was increase in Porto Alegre (6.3%), Rio de Janeiro (3.6%) and São Paulo (1.3%).  

In the classification by activity, the biggest increase in the average income usually earned received in comparison with that of May 2013 was registered in the group Construction (1.6%) and the biggest decrease came from Mining and quarrying industry, manufacturing industry and distribution of electricity, gas and water (-1.7%). In the annual comparison, there was increase of 4.4% in Construction and decrease in the group Other services (-2.7%).

In the classification by employment position, the biggest increase in the average real income usually earned over that of June 2012 occurred among workers without a formal employment contract in the private sector (4.2%):
