The Cartographic Base for the national territory at 1:250,000 (BC250), which is part of the SIGBRASIL project, developed by IBGE, is a pioneer initiative in Brazil. Constituting a cartographic reference for the actions of planning, monitoring and updating of information on natural resources in the country, the new scale (in which 1cm on the map is equivalent to 2.5 km on the land) enables a much more detailed visualization than the previous one, 1:1000,000. BC250, in shape format, which allows its use in the geographic information system (GIS/SIG), is available at

ftp://geoftp.ibge.gov.br/mapeamento_sistematico/base_vetorial_continua_escala_250mil/

The construction of the Cartographic Base followed, as a reference, procedures described in the Technical Geosciences Manual (the 12th of a series) which can be accessed at http://biblioteca.ibge.gov.br/index.php/biblioteca-catalogo?view=detalhes&id=296663. The Manual of Technical Procedures for the Inspection, Quality Control and Validation of the Cartographic Base at the 1:250,000 scale is produced by the Cartography Department of the IBGE’s Directorate of Geosciences. It is aimed at guiding the inspection of mapping services, standardizing procedures such as the preparation of images and the construction of maps, and thus ensuring quality to the material produced.

Keeping data from several categories of information, in a thoroughly integrated and digital way, the new 1:250,000 scale Cartographic Base will be ready to become part of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure in a near future.

The map of Brazil below shows its division into blocks of the Cartographic Base at the 1:250,000 scale, now available for 81% of the national territory (the blocks marked in three shades of blue will be ready in the end of 2012). The Base can be accessed at
