Change 2017 / 2016 harvest
30.1 % (55.6 million metric tons

The June estimate for the 2017 harvest of cereals, legumes and oilseeds hit 240.3 million metric tons, with an increase of 30.1% in relation to the amount registered in 2016 (184.7 million metric tons), that is, 55.6 million metric tons more. The estimated area to be harvested (61. million hectares) increased by 7.0% versus the 2016 figure (57.1 million hectares). Soybean is expected to hit a record output (114.8 million metric tons), as well as corn (97.7 million metric tons). In relation to 2016, there were increases of 2.3% in the area to be harvested, for soybeans (2.3%), corn (17.7%) and rice (3.6%). Increase of output was observed in the three crops: 19.5% for soybeans, 1.5% for rice and 53.5% for corn.

In terms of May estimates, output increased by 1.7 million metric tons (0.7%) and area, by 117.4 thousand hectares (0.2%).Rice, corn and soybeans, the main products in this group, accounted, together, for 93.5% of the estimated production and for 87.8% of the area to be harvested. The complete LSPA publication is available here.

A comparison of May and June estimates shows the following highlights: peanuts – 1st crop (26.2%), onion (5.7%), potato - 2nd crop (4.5%), potato - 3rd crop (2.3%), potato - 1st crop (1.6%), corn - 2nd crop (1.3%), soybeans (0.8%), corn - 1st crop (-0.4%), bean - 3rd crop (-1.4%), bean – 2nd crop (-3.9%) and peanuts - 2nd crop (-54.3%).

PEANUTS (in the shell) – The June estimate for the national harvest of 2017 reports an area to be harvested of 149.4 thousand hectares, with an output of 541.2 thousand metric tons and an average yield 3,622 kg/ha, 8.8%, 21.3% and 11.4% bigger in comparison with those in the previous month. The Southeast Region accounts for 94.3% of the national output. São Paulo, the main producer in the country, with 92.5% of participation in the national total, had an estimate of 500.8 thousand metric tons, in an area to be harvested of 130.1 thousand hectares and an average yield of 3,851 kg/ha, respectively 23.5%, 10.1% and 12.1% bigger, against results in the previous month. Favorable climate conditions and the increased planting of peanuts in renewed area once planted with sugarcane was of fundamental importance to the expansion of production.

POTATO – The estimated output of potato is 4.1 million metric tons, 2.6% above that in the previous month. The area planted and the area to be harvested recorded increase of 1.9%, whereas the average yield presents increase of 1.9%, and the average yield, of 0.6%. Grown in three different periods in Brazil: summer (1st crop), fall (2nd crop) and winter (3rd crop), these products need cool weather, proper availability of water during its cycle and strict pest control.

The estimated output for this 1st crop is 2.0 million metric tons, with na increase of 1.6% in relation to the previous month. The 2nd crop estimate indicates na output of 1.2 million metric tons, with an increase of 4.5%. For the 3rd crop, the expected output is 909.2 Thousand metric tons, which means na increase of 2.3%

ONION- The esimate for onion production hit 1.7 million metric tons, 5.7% more than in the previous month. Although the area planted and the area to be harvested recorded a decrease of 0.5%, average yield increased 6.1%. The overall output is expected to reach 90.6 thousand metric tons above the May estimate. In Santa Catarina, the main producer of onion in the country, accounting for 30.1% of the national total in 2017, climate has been beneficial to crops. In Santa Catarina, average yield was reevaluated, with a change from 22,057 kg/ha to 24,661 kg/ha, 11.8% more, although planted area and the area to be harvested fell 1.6%.

The output expected for 2017 is supposed to hit 509.4 thousand metric tons, with an increase of 10% in relation to the previous month. Bahia, the second main producer in the country with a participation of 17.7% in the national output in 2017, expects an output of 299.4 thousand metric tons, and decrease of 0.3% against the previous month. Goiás, another important onion producer, had its output reevaluated and the current figure is 135.3 thousand metric tons (30.2%) more than in the previous month. In spite of a decrease of 5.4% in the area planted and in the area to be harvested, average yield was revised with an increase of 37.7%, as a result of the good climate conditions and the subsequent availability of water springs for irrigation.

BEAN (seed) – A comparison with May shows the estimated area to be harvested fell by 0.5%. Decreases in output and average yield are 1.9% and 1.4%, respectively. The main producers in this case are Paraná, with 22.0%, Minas Gerais, with 16.5% and Goiás, with 9.8% of participation in the national output.

The output of beans is estimated at 1.6 million metric tons, with a decrease of 0.4% against the May figure. Reduction of the estimated output in bean – 1st crop had a major contribution from the Northeast Region, which recorded a decrease of 8.1 thousand metric tons, that is, 1.9% less than in May.

The 2ªnd crop of beans had an estimate 3.9% below the May figure, similarly to average yield, which decreased 4.0%. This decrease resulted mainly from the contributions of Paraná and Santa Catarina. In Paraná, there was decrease of 13.8%, similarly to the average yield that fell 13.9% in relation to May. Harsh climate conditions were observed in the cycle of the crop, with frosts in the end of April, low temperatures in the months of May and June, too much rain at the time of harvest. The same took place in Santa Catarina, which recorded a decrease of 5.0% in the estimated average yield and of 19.9% in the area to be harvested, resulting in a decrease of 23,9% in the estimated output versus that of the previous month.

Regarding bean seed - 3rd crop, a 1.4% decrease (6.7 thousand metric tons) is expected in comparison with the previous estimate. The main producers in this case are Minas Gerais (39.0%), Goiás (31.8%) and Mato Grosso (14.9%). In Minas Gerais, a decrease of 2.4% in output is expected, whereas Goiás is supposed to record decline of 1.8% against the May result.

CORN (grain) – The estimated output of corn amounts to 97.7 million metric tons, with an increase of 0.7% against the previous month. The increase resulted from positive adjustments in the 2nd crop, which is now at the harvesting phase, once the estimate for the summer harvest was reduced by 0.4%. That decrease was m ainly caused by the decrease in the Ceará estimate, which changed from 589.3 Thousand metric tons in May to 312.7 thousand in June. There was decrease of 47.1% in average yield, changing from 1 002 kg/ha to 530 kg/ha, as a result of the lack of rain. Corn 2nd crop currently represents 68.4% of the total to be harvested in Brazil, and the expected output is 66.8 million metric tons, 1.3% more than in the previous month.

Average yield increased 0.9%. This month recorded increases in the estimates of Paraná (0.3%), 37 591 metric tons; Mato Grosso do Sul (4.6%), 413 631 metric tons; Goiás (4.5%), 380 700 metric tons and Bahia (6.6%), 29 400 metric tons. Except for Paraná, which had its planted area increased by 0.2%, the other aforementioned states were influenced by the positive reevaluation of average yield, presented as corn harvesting advances.

SOYBEAN (grain) – The estimated soybean output is 114.8 million metric tons, with an increase of 0.8% in relation to the previous month. This increase is mainly due to the final adjustments in the end of the harvesting period for estimates of Bahia (7.9%), increase of 381 600 metric tons; Paraná (0.4%), increase of 81 737 metric tons; Santa Catarina (4.4%), increase of 101 422 metric tons; Mato Grosso do Sul (3.0%), increase of 258,632 metric tons and Goiás (0.2%), increase of 22,769 metric tons.
