PIA Product 2014: diesel, iron, cars and gasoline, the four major industrial products in Brazil

October 19, 2016 09h48 AM | Last Updated: January 18, 2018 06h42 PM

In the ranking of the 3,441 products investigated by the IBGE´s Annual Survey of Industry - Product
(PIA Product), the first four (diesel fuel, iron ore, cars and gasoline) generated 9.7% of the revenue from industrial sales in 2014, which added up to R$2.2 trillion.

Among the 100 products with the highest revenue, the three products that increased their participation in the total industrial sales in 2014 in relation to 2013 were ethanol, air conditioners and aluminum. The three products that lost more participation were steel rebars, harvesters and steel coils and plates.

Still considering the 100 highest revenues, metal plates, fertilizers and ethanol were the products that gained more participation in the industrial sales compared with 2007. Pig iron, steel rebars and aluminum were those that lost more participation between 2007 and 2014.

As the major industrial product in Brazil, diesel fuel also led in the Northeast and Southeast, and ranked in the second position in the South. Iron ore and TV sets led in the North Region, whereas beef, soybean cake and ethanol were the major products in the Central-West. See here the publication of the PIA Product 2014.

PIA Product 2014 brings information on the sales of 3,441 products of the 41.2 thousand industrial enterprises with 30 and more employed persons and their 51.4 thousand local branches. The total sales of these products reached R$2.2 trillion in 2014. The sectors that mostly contributed to the industrial sales were: food products (15.2%), motor vehicles (10.4%), coke, petroleum products and biofuels (10.4%), chemicals (9.7%) and basic metals (6.3%).

Having sold R$75.1 billion and contributed with 3.5% of the total, diesel fuel remained as the leader in the ranking of the value of sales in 2014 (table below), followed by crude or processed iron ore (R$49.2 billion and 2.3% of the total). The first four products in this ranking accounted for 9.7% of the value of industrial sales in 2014.

Compared with 2013, the industrial sectors that lost more participation in the total sales were motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (-1.8 percentage points - p.p.); quarrying of metallic minerals (-0.6 p.p.); basic metals (-0.2 p.p.); machinery and equipment (-0.2 p.p.) and tobacco products (-0.1 p.p.). The sectors that increased the participation in this period were: coke, petroleum products and biofuels (0.6 p.p.); quarrying of petroleum and natural gas (0.5 p.p.); beverages (0.4 p.p.); food products (0.3p.p.); and chemicals (0.3 p.p.).

Ethanol, air conditioners and aluminum were the products that gained more participation in the industrial sales in relation to 2013.

In 2014, the 100 industrial products leading the value of sales generated a revenue of
R$1.11 trillion or 51.6% of the total revenue of the industrial enterprises with 30 and more employed persons. Among these 100 products, those that gained more positions in the ranking in relation to 2013 were: ethyl alcohol, which changed from the the 164th to the 80th position; air conditioners (from the 118th to the 75th position); aluminum can for packaging (from the 96th to the 71st); aluminum oxide, which changed from the 66th to the 42nd position (table below).
