Continuous PNAD: unemployment rate of 11.6% in the quarter ended in July 2016

The unemployment rate was estimated at 11.6% in the moving quarter which ended in July 2016, and stayed at 0.4 percentage points (p.p.) above the quarterly moving average from February to April (11.2%). In comparison with the same quarter in the previous year, when the estimated rate was 8.6%, there was also increase (3.0 percentage points).

The unemployed population (11.8 milllion persons) increased by 3.8% in comparison with the quarter February-April (11.4 million), which meant na increase of 436 Thousand persons. In comparison with the same quarter a year ago, this estimate increased by 37.4%, recording na increase of 3.2 million persons.

The employed population (90.5 milhões) remained stable when compared with the quarter February - April 2016 (in spite of a decrease of 146 Thousand persons, this decrease was not statistically significant). Versus the same quarter last year, when the total numer of employed persons was 92.2 milllion persons, there was decline of 1.8%. That representes a decrease in the number of employed persons (1.7 million persons).

The number of workers with a formal contract (34.3 milllion) did not record statistically significant change in comparison with the quarter from February to April 2016. Nevertheless, in comparison with the quarter May to July 2015, there was decrease of 3.9%, that is, 1.4 million persons with a fomral employment contract.

The average usual real earnings from all the activities (R$ 1,985) was stable in comparison with that of the quarter from February to April 2016 (R$ 1,997) and decline of 3.0% versus the same quarter in the previous year (R$ 2,048).

The usual wage bill of from all the activities of the employed population (R$ 175.3 bilhões) did not record any change in relation to the quarter that went from February to April 2016, and recorded decrease of 4.0% in comparison with the same quarter in the previous year.

The continuous PNAD indicators are calculated for moving quarters, using information about the last three months of the survey. The rate of the quarterly moving average ending in July 2016 was calculated according to data collected in May/2016, June/2016 and July/2016. For example, the information used for the calculation of indicators for the moving quarters ended in June and July had a percentage of data repetition of about 66%. This repetition only ceases to exist after an interval of two moving quarters. More information on the methodology of the survey can be found here.

In the quarter May to July 2016, there were about 11.8 million unemployed persons in Brazil. This estimate showed an increase of 3.8% (436 thousand persons) versus the quarter of February 2016 to April 2016, when the unemployed rate was estimated at 11.4 million persons. Versus the same quarter a year ago, this estimate increased 37.4%, a rise of 3.2 million persons out of the workforce.

The number of employed persons was estimated at 90.5 million in the quarter May 2016 to July 2016. This estimate remained stable when compared with the quarter of February 2016 - April 2016 (despite decrease of 146 thousand persons, there was no statistically- significant change). In comparison with the same quarter a year ago, when the total of employers was 92.2 million persons, there was a decline of 1.8%, minus 1.7 million persons in the number of employed ones.

The number of persons with a formal contract employed in the private sector, 34.3 million persons, did not record a statistically-significant difference in comparison with the quarter February 2016 – April 2016. However, versus the quarter May 2015- July 2015 there was a decreased of 3.9% which represented a decline of approximately 1.4 million persons with a formal contract.

The category of workers without a formal contract in the private sector (10.2 million persons) remained stable in relation to the quarter February 2016-April 2016, and, versus the same period in the previous year, it remained stable as well.

The number of domestic workers (6.2 million) remained stable, both in relation to the quarter February-April 2016, and versus the same period in the previous year, from May 2015 to July 2015.

The number of persons employed in the public sector (11.2 million persons) increased 1.4%, 160 thousand persons more in relation to the quarter February 2016-April 2016. Versus the same period in the previous year, there was no statistically-significant change.

The number of employees (3.8% million) recorded stability in relation to the quarter February 2016-April 2016, and a decrease of 4.6% in relation to the same period in the previous year, with minus 184 thousand persons.

The category of self-employed workers (22.6 million) dropped 1.5% in relation to the quarter February 2016-April 2016 (342 thousand persons). In comparison with the quarter May 2015-July 2015 there was an increase of 2.4%, an increment of 527 thousand persons in this condition.

In the analysis of the number of employed persons, by groups of activity, in relation to the quarter February 2016-April 2016, there was stability in all the groups.

In comparison with the quarter May 2015 to July 2016, decrease was observed in general industry, 10.6% (-1.4 million persons) and information, communication and financial, real estate, professional and administrative activities, 9.8% (-1.1 million persons). There was increase in the groups of transportation, storage and mailing, 4.8% (205 thousand persons); domestic services, 3.5% (212 thousand persons) and Public administration, defense, social security, education, human health and social services, 2.7% (408 thousand persons). No statistically-significant change was registered in the other groups.

Theaverage usual real earnings from the activities of all employed persons was estimated at R$ 1,985, recording stability versus the quarter February 2016-April 2016 (R$ 1,997) and decrease of 3.0% in relation to the same quarter in the previous year (R$ 2,048).

In relation to the quarter February 2016 to April 2016, there was decrease of average yield for workers with a formal contract in the private sector (-2.1%) and for domestic workers (-1.7%), whereas for workers without a formal contract in the private sector, there was a rise of 5.1%. In the other forms of employment type there was no statistically-significant change of average earnings from work. In comparison with the quarter May 2015 to July 2015, workers with a formal contract in the private sector (-3.3%), employers (-9.4%) and self-employed workers (-3.5%) recorded decreases in their usual real average yield. Workers without a formal contract in the private sector and workers in the private sector registered increases in their earnings (6.1% and 3.5%, respectively). The other groups remained stable.

In comparison with the quarter February 2016 to April 2016, only the groups trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (-2.0%) and domestic services (-1.7%) recorded decrease in their average earnings. The other groups remained stable. Versus the same quarter in the previous year, the groups recording decreases in their average earnings were: other services (-6.0%) and trade, repair of motor vehicles and of motorcycles (-5.0%). There was no statistically-significant change in the other groups of activity.

The usual real wage bill from all the activities of the employed persons was estimated at R$ 175,3 million reais, having remained stable in relation to figures of the quarter February 2016 to April 2016, and recording a decrease of 4.0% versus the same month a year ago.
