Continuous PNAD: unemployment rate in the October 2016 quarter was 11.8%

The unemployment rate of the October 2016 quarter in Brazil was estimated at 11.8%, and surpassed the rate recorded in the July 2016 moving quarter (11.6%), being 2.9 percentage points above that of the same quarter in the previous year (8.9%).

The unemployed population (12.0 million persons) remained stable in compariosn with that of May-July 2016 and increased 32.7% (more 3.0 million persons) in the comparison with the equivalent quarter in 2015.

The employed population (89.9 million persons) recorded a decrease of 0.7%, when compared with the quarter May-July 2016 (minus 604 thousand persons). Versus the equivalent quarter in 2015, there was decrease of 2.6% (minus 2.4 milllion persons).

The number of workers with a formal contract in the private sector, estimated at 34.0 million persons, recorded a decrease of 0.9% versus the figure of May-July 2016 (minus 303 thousand persons). In comparison with the same quarter in the previous year, there was decrease of 3.7% (minus 1.3 million persons).

The average real earnings from all the activities (R$ 2,025) increased 0.9% versus that of May-July 2016 (R$ 2,006) and fell 1.3% in relation to that of the same quarter last year (R$ 2,052).

The usual real earnings received by persons employed in all the activities (R$ 177.7 billion) did not record significant change in relation to the quarter May-July 2016, and recorded decrease of 3.2% in versus the same quarter in the previous year. Continuous PNAD indicators are calculated for moving quarters, according to information on the last three months of the survey. The rate of th moving quarter which ended in October 2016 was calculated according with information collected in August 2016, September 2016 and October 2016. The data used to calculate indicators for the moving quarters ended in October and September, for example, presents a data repetition of about 66%. This repetition is only interrupted after a period of two moving quarters. Additional information on the survey methodology can be accessed here.

In the quarter of October 2016, there were about 12.0 million unemployed persons in Brazil. This figure was stable versus that of the July 2016 quarter, wehn unemployment was estimated at 11.8 million persons. Versus the same quarter in the previous year, this estimate increased by 32.7%, meaning na increase of 3.0 million unemployed persons in the workforce.

The number of employed persons was estimated at 89.9 million in the quarter of October 2016. This estimate was lower (0.7%), when compared with the quarter of July 2016 (a decrease of 604 Thousand persons). In comparison with the same quarter a year ago, when the number of employed persons reached 92.3 million, there was decline of 2.6%, meaning a decrease of approximately 2.4 milllion persons in the total employed ones.

The average real earnings from all the activities of the employed persons was estimated at R$ 2,025, in the quarter of October 2016, recording increase of  0.9% in the comparison with the July 2016 figure (R$ 2,006) and decrease of -1.3% in relation to the same quarter in the previous year (R$ 2,052).

The only employment type which recorded increase of average yield in relation to the quarter of July 2016 was Employed in the private sector with a formal contract, with an increase of 1.9%. There were no changes in the other categories. In comparison with the quarter of October 2015, Employers recorded a decrease in the average usual real earnings (-7.1%), and the other categories remained stabel in terms of average yield.

In comparison with the July 2016 quarter, the only average yields recording change were those of Agriculture, Livestock, Forestry, Fisihng and Aquiculture (4.3%) and the group of Trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (3.4%), and average yields of the other groups of activity remained stable. Versus the same quarter in the previous year, the income of all the groups remained stable.
