The history of the IBGE, which is part of the history of Brazil, begins in Rio de Janeiro, with the leading role of being born at the center of the Executive Branch, exercising the function of centralizing Statistics and Geosciences and modernizing the Brazilian State.

The IBGE was installed on May 29, 1936, at Palácio do Catete, in Rio de Janeiro, by President Getúlio Vargas, initially as the National Statistics Institute (INE). On January 26, 1938, Getúlio Vargas signed the decree that gave the office the name of Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The location, at the time the headquarters of the Federal Administration, served as the base for the creation of the institution that modernized data collection, including Statistics and Geosciences conventions.

Celebration after 90 years

To celebrate this historical milestone in the founding of the IBGE, the Palácio do Catete – today, the Museum of the Republic – will host, 90 years later, on May 29, 2026, from 3 pm to 5 pm, the seminar “90 Years: The History of the IBGE in the Presidency of the Republic (1936–1964),” which will have a special message from the Honorable Celso Amorim, Chief Advisor of the Special Advisory to the President of the Republic.

Like Amorim, the first president of the IBGE was the then Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Carlos de Macedo Soares, the longest serving leader of the office, in the periods from 1936 to 1951 and from 1955 to 1956.

IBGE's trajectory within the Presidency

The IBGE's trajectory within the Presidency of the Republic is fundamental to understanding the strategic importance of its foundation. This is a necessary dialogue to understand its connection with the current scenario and the future, given the challenges and opportunities of the Digital Age — both for the IBGE itself, one of the most relevant Statistics and Geosciences offices in the world, and for the entire statistical and geoscientific system.

“For 90 years, the IBGE has transformed territory into knowledge, population into national consciousness and data into sovereignty. From Palácio do Catete, where the first board emerged under the old agrarianism of the 1930s, to the current one, which operates and plans in the digital age in a democratic and collective way, the IBGE follows Brazil, learning to see itself broadly to be governed increasingly by intelligence and national sovereignty,” highlights the President of the IBGE, Marcio Pochmann.

For Pochmann, it is essential to understand the origin and leading role of the IBGE being born within the Presidency of the Republic. “When created and subordinated directly to the Presidency of the Republic between 1936 and 1964, the IBGE was born in the heart of the power of the national State to fulfill the strategic mission of transforming a fragmented, agrarian and unequal country into a nation capable of knowing its territory, planning its future and asserting its sovereignty. Before artificial intelligence existed, Brazil already understood that there is no strong State without statistical and geographic intelligence.”

After the seminar, the gardens of Palácio do Catete will host, starting at 7 pm, with accreditation at 6 pm, the launching ceremony of the “90 Years Medal”, made by the Brazilian Mint, in a limited series. The event is supported by the Museum of the Republic and the Ministry of Culture.

The Palace will also be the stage for the launch and detailing of the major national event for the 90th anniversary of IBGE, which will take place in June 2026, in Brasília, and will have the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, as guest of honor.
