The IBGE releases today the first report on the 2022 Population Census data collection Since the start of the operation, on August 1st, up to yeterday (29) 58,291,842 persons had been enumerated, in 20,290,359 housing units in the country. A total of 36.51% of these persons were in the Northeast Region; 35.51%, in the Soitheast; 11.87%, in the South; 9.44%, in the North; and 6.67%, in the Central West. This morning, the total enumerated population had reached 59,616,994 persons.

On the 2022 Population Census website, it is possible to monitor the enumerated population daily and also the evolution of the enumeration areas covered, by Federation Unit.

“The individual productivity of the enumerators is in accordance with the expected figures. The enumeration areas are being covered as scheduled and the systems for data collection, monitoring and transmission have worked properly,” says Luciano Duarte, technical manager for the Census.

Considering the 452,246 urban and rural enumeration areas in the country, 38.4% are being covered now. The most advanced state in terms of percentage of sectors covered is Rio Grande do Norte (53%), followed by Pernambuco (52.45%) and the Federal District (52.04%). The states of Mato Grosso (21.81%), Roraima (25.75%) and São Paulo (29.63%) are those with the lowest percentage of sectors covered.

Also, 450,140 indigenous persons (0.77%) and 386,750 quilombolas (0.66%) have been enumerated. “In the case of quilombolas, this figure, although preliminary, is unprecedented, since this type of survey is being conducted for the first time,” says Mr. Duarte.

He mentions that about 2.3% of the households refused to complete the census, a percentage that is expected to decrease by the end of the census operation, after all the enforcement protocols are applied.

As for the type of questionaire, 8.2% of the housing units (17,697,415) completed the basic questionnaire and 11.8% (2,365,208), the extended one, percentages which are in accordance with the sample defined by the Institute. Six minutes has been the average length of time spent to complete the basic questionnaire and 18 minutes, to complete the extended questionnaire.

Most of the questionnaires (99.7%) were answered face-to-face, with 34,055 housing units having chosen to answer on the Internet and 30,202 by telephone.

In the data collection monitoring system it is possible to generate partial age pyramids. So far, 47.8% of the enumerated population were men and 52.2% were women.

“It is already possible to see the population’s aging in the partial pyramid, but the top of the pyramid is high in volume, with peaks at the ages of 40 and 20, as expected. Quality indicators have shown that information is consistent, and there is no indication of undercounting or overcounting of some age,” says the technical manager for the Census.

Selection processes are regularly opened

The Institute has been facing some difficulties resulting from lack of professionals to work as enumerators in certain areas. All over the country, the IBGE has 144,634 enumerators, 78.8% of the total needed.

The highest deficit is found in Mato Grosso, with only 51.2% of the vacancies filled. Alagoas, on the otehr hand, has 99.6% of Its vacancies filled. Besides, because of specific situations data collection in some areas started a little later,” Mr. Duarte explains.

In order to solve the problem, the IBGE regularly promotes additional selection processes, an administrative measure routinely adopted in every Census. Registration for the latest selection process ended on August 29th, with a total of 6,514 positions for Enumerator and 251 for Municipal Census Agent (ACM) and Supervising Census Agent (ACS). The enumerators will be wearing uniforms, a vest and a cap with the Census logo, an identification badge and the DMC. It is also possible to check the enumerator’s identity on the IBGE website Answering to the IBGE or by telephone at toll-free number 0800 721 8181. Both are visible on the enumerator’s badge, which also has a QR code with a link to the website. To obtain the desired information, one has to fill in the name, enrollment number or CPF (national identification number) of the enumerator.
