As part of the celebration of the 85 years, the IBGE launches today (28) the 80th edition of the Brazilian Statistical Yearbook 2020. The publication shows an overview of the country, including territorial, environmental, demographic and socioeconomic information from surveys and studies carried out by the IBGE and other institutions dedicated to the systematic knowledge of the nation. The e-book is available here.

"Among other relevant subjects, this edition brings news like the number of cases and deaths due to Covid-19 registered in Brazil last year. It also provides details about land use and cover, as well as about susceptibility to landslide events, subjects that portray the natural picture of the country. It is a reference work, with a representative character, made from reliable sources that follow up the changes in the society," states Isabela Torres, manager of the Yearbook.

The publication is divided into seven sections. The first section gathers data like the historic evolution of the Brazilian municipalities and borders indicating neighboring countries and the Atlantic Ocean, as well as detailed information of each municipality, like the straight line distance from the capitals. This section also brings data on the natural resources and the environment, like the number of local units and the number of persons employed in the recycling activity.

This section highlights the physical-biotic characterization related to geology, geomorphology, pedology and vegetation, the types of land use and cover and its distribution in the Brazilian biomes, as well as the risks of landslide events. The data are available in tables and graphs.

The second section describes the socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of the population, including results of the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNAD), which brings data on education, migration and characteristics of households, among others.

Still in this section, the Health subject releases information from the Ministry of Health and State and Municipal Health Secretariats about the number and incidence of cases and deaths due to Covid-19 in the first year of the pandemic in Brazil. The information is split into Major Regions and Federation Units.

Concerning the agricultural production, forestry, silviculture, headcounts of livestock and aviculture, and animal production, the third section presents data on agricultural surveys, like the Survey of Stocks, the Municipal Agricultural Production and the Forestry Activities.

The industrial activity is portrayed in the fourth section, which gathers indexes on the production and sales, and data on electricity, gas and oil, among other information which can be found, for example, in the Annual Survey of Industry.

The fifth section brings the results of surveys on trade, transportation, communication and other services, like the Annual Survey of Trade and the Annual Survey of Services. The sixth section deals with indexes, prices, costs and salaries in Brazil, bringing information, for example, of the Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA).

The yearbook gathers macroeconomic, Public Finances, Monetary and Financial System, Foreign Sector and National Accounts data in the seventh section. Information on the position of international investment was included, like transactions between residents and non-residents, international reserves and foreign debts, as well as stocks and direct investments. The data were provided by the Central Bank.

A glossary is included in each subject of the Brazilian Statistical Yearbook 2020, describing the concepts investigated in the surveys and the references of the sources consulted. The reading guide guides the consultation to the publication, streamlining the understanding of its contents. As the coordinator of the National System of Statistics, the IBGE is in charge of publishing it.
