The services sector had, in 2017, 1,307 million companies. They employed 12,302 million persons and paid, on average, 2.2 minimum wages. There was a decrease in the three indicators in comparison with 2016, when there were a total 1,330 million companies (-1.7%), with 12,345 million employed persons (-0.3%), paying 2.3 minimum wages. In the period, 23.1 thousand companies were closed.

Figures also fell in relation to 2014, before the crisis, when the services sector had 1,321 million companies (-1.1% in relation to 2017), 13.0 million workers (-5.3%) with an average compensation of 2.4 minimum wages.

The manager of Analysis and Dissemination from the IBGE's Department of Structural and Special Surveys, Synthia Santana, says that 2016 was a tough year for the economy. With reference to the services sector, most specifically, she explains those companies render services to other companies and to families. “The services sector deals with those that were facing a difficult situation in 2016. For that reason it did not manage to recover in 2017. The demand for services was reduced”.

In 2017, the companies in the services sector generated R$ 1,5 trillion in net operating revenue (0.2% less than in 2016) and paid R$ 336.7 billion in salaries, withdrawals and other compensation.

In relation to 2016, athe biggest decrease in the number of companies took place in services rendered mainly to families (-4.6%), which encompasses activities such as lodging, feeding, personal services, etc. As for the employed persons, real estate activities (5.8%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (0.2%) were the only ones to record positive results. The worst result was that of maintenance and repais services, with a decrease of 2.9%.
