Enrollment for the first online course on the IBGE System of Automatic Recovery - Sidra is open until Thursday (March 28). Sidra is the interactive platform to visualize the data of the surveys produced by the IBGE. The course is free and focused on public servants, scholars and journalists, though any interested person can participate. The first class has 600 seats and a workload of 15 hours/classes.

Applied by the National School of Statistical Sciences - Ence in partnership with the IBGE´s Center for Information Documentation and Dissemination - CDDI, the course aims at training users to consult in Sidra information like unemployment rate, inflation, gross domestic product - GDP and population, as well as at creating thematic rankings and producing graphs, maps and cartograms from these data.

The program content includes video tutorials, hints and exercises based on posts in the IBGE social media and press news using IBGE data. "The idea is to show how much information the participants can obtain and check through Sidra and, at the same time, introduce the surveys a little bit more", explains Hugo Campos, the course designer.

After enrolling in the course, participants have up to 30 days to complete it. At the end, those who obtain a grade equal to or higher than 7.0 in the final examination will be certified by Ence. The course will be delivered on a continual basis, i.e., new seats will be open every month along the year. Enrollment for the next classes will be available in the second fortnight of each month.

Course gets citizens closer to IBGE data

This initiative is in line with the IBGE´s institutional goals of strengthening knowledge dissemination, fostering the academic research and extension integrated with the institutional production and broadening dissemination and communication with users and society.

The IBGE carried out a pilot test of the course last February. At the time, more than 500 persons among academic researchers, journalists and representatives of state departments and public institutions were invited to take part. Architect and Master´s candidate in Urban and Regional Planning at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul - UFRGS, Jennifer Domeneghini was one who approved the course.

"As a student and professional, I consult IBGE data every moment, from a simple survey on population, information on a territorial area, and population profile until data like the urban profile of the surroundings of housing units. With the course, I can now make the consultations easily and intuitively", tells her.
