Retail sales record change of -0.1% in May

In the comparison with May 2016, retail grows 2.4%. It was the second consecutive positive rate of 2017, but the cumulative changes in the year (-0.8%) and in twelve months (-3.6%) remain negative.

In May 2017, the national retail trade changed -0.1% in the volume of sales over the previous month, in the seasonally-adjusted series. In the same comparison, the nominal revenue recorded a change of 0.2%. In the seasonally-adjusted series, the index of the quarterly moving average once again registered stability both for the volume of sales (-0.1%) and for the nominal revenue (0,0%).

In the comparison with the same month a year ago, the non-adjusted series registered growth of 2.4% - the second consecutive positive rate in the year. As a result, the volume index of the retail accumulated a drop of 0.8% in the first five months of the year. The cumulative indicator in the last 12 months, decreasing 3.6% in May 2017, remained giving signs of pace decline, which started in October 2016 (-6.8%). For the same comparisons, the nominal revenue of sales recorded changes of 3.1%, 1.8% and 3.5%, respectively (Table 1).

The extended retail trade, which includes, besides the retail activities, Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and Construction material, recorded decrease of 0.7% over the previous month for the volume of sales and -1.2% for the nominal revenue, in the seasonally-adjusted series. In relation to May 2016, the extended retail trade recorded 4.5% both for the volume of sales and for the nominal revenue of sales.  Concerning the cumulative rates, the figures were 0.6% in the year and -5.2% in the last 12 months, for volume of sales; and 1.1% and 0.2% for the nominal revenue, respectively.

Four activities recorded negative rates in retail trade

Decreasing 0.1% in the volume of sales, the retail trade between April and May 2017, in the seasonally-adjusted series, had four activities recording negative rates, with a highlight to Fabric wearing apparel and footwear (-7.8%); Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-4.5%); Office, computer and communication equipment and material (-2.8%); and Other articles of personal and household use (-0.1%). On the other hand, among the four sectors that increased their sales this month, the most important performances were recorded in Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (1.4%); followed by  Furniture and domestic appliances (1.2%); Pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetic and toilet articles  (0.9%); and Fuels and lubricants  (0.6%).

The extended retail trade, in the seasonally-adjusted series, had a negative change for the volume of sales between April and May 2017 (-0.7%). Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and accessories, after a relative stability (-0.1%), advanced 1.2% over April, whereas in Construction material, the growth was of 1.9%, in the same comparison, offsetting the greatest part of the 2.0% drop registered in the previous month.

In the comparison with the same month a year ago, the retail trade advances 2.4% in May 2017, with five of the eight activities presenting positive performances mostly due to the celebration of Mother's Day and to a workday less in May 2017 (22 days) in relation to May 2016 (21 days). As a highlight, in terms of greatest contribution to the formation of the global retail rate (Table 3), is the sector of Furniture and domestic appliances (13.8%).

Other positive relevant contributions on the national total are Fabric, apparel and footwear (5.0%); Other articles of personal and household use (2.6%); Pharmaceutical and medical goods, cosmetic and toilet articles (3.8%); Office, computer and communication equipment and material (8.8%). The sales of Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco stood stable (0.0%) in relation in May 2016. On the other hand, with reduction in the volume of sales in the same comparison, are found Fuels and lubricants (-0.9%) and Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-1.0%).

Mother's Day boosts sales of furniture and domestic appliances as well as of fabric, apparel and footwear

Furniture and household appliances, with a change of 13.8% in the volume of sales in relation to May last year, registered the highest positive impact in the formation of the global retail rate (2.4%).  In the Mother's Day month, the sales dynamics of this segment in 2017 can be associated with the reduction of the interest rate to individuals[1] and the recomposition of the usual real wage bill[2]. The sales of this segment accumulated in the year registered advance of 4.6% and, in the cumulative index in 12 months, the rate still remains in the negative sphere (-4.7%).

The activity of Fabric, apparel and footwear, with a change of 5.0% in May over the same month a year ago, was responsible for the second biggest positive contribution in the composition of the general index of the retail. Mother's Day celebration, with positive impacts, particularly in the sales of this sector, contributes to an advance in the volume of sales above the general average. The cumulative results presented growth of 6.0% in the year and a drop of 4.3% in the last 12 months.

The sales of Other articles of personal and household use - which encompasses department stores, jewelry, sport articles and toy stores - with an advance of 2.6% in relation to May 2016, exerted the third highest positive impact over the total retail rate of volume of sales. For the first five months of the year, the cumulative change of this activity was of -2.0%, and, for the last 12 months, -5.2%.

The segment of Pharmaceutical, medical and orthopedic goods and toiletries, advancing 3.8%, over May 2016, recorded the first positive rate after a sequence of 13 negative rates, and exerted the fourth biggest contribution to the general result of the retail. In the cumulative index of the year and in the last 12 months this sector showed drops of 1.6% and 3.0%, respectively.

With a change of 8.8% in the volume of sales in the comparison with May 2016, the activity Office, computer and communication material and equipment also influenced positively the retail global rate. The results in cumulative terms were of -4.6% in the first five months of the year and -7.6%, in the last 12 months.

The segment of Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco stood stable for the volume of sales in relation in May 2016 (Table 3). In terms of cumulative results, this activity changed -0.9% in the year and -2.0% in the last 12 months.

The segment of fuels and lubricants had decrease of 0.9% in the volume of sales in relation to May 2016, influencing negatively the global retail rate. The cumulative change in the year was -4.3%, whereas in the last 12 months, the rate was -7.0%.

The sales of Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery recorded decrease of 1.0% in the volume of sales over May 2016, with a cumulative rate in the year and in the last 12 months of -4.3% and -10.5%, respectively. The downward trend of this activity has been influenced by a certain replacement of print products for electronic ones. It is worth highlighting that the IPCA[3] of May, accumulated in 12 months, of the group “stationary” registered a rise above inflation.

Considering the extended retail trade, in May 2017, the advance reached 4.5% in the volume of sales compared to May 2016. The cumulative rate in the first five months of the year for the extended retail was of -0.6% and, in 12 months, of -5.2%. May's result interrupts a sequence of 35 months of negative rates in a row and reflects mostly the sales performance of Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces, with 4.5% growth in relation to May 2016 and advance of 9.3% in Construction material for the same comparison. The cumulative result in five months of these activities were respectively, -6.2% and 4.2% in the last 12 months, of -11.2% and -3.6%.

Twelve states down in the volume of sales

From April to May 2017, the decrease (-0.1%) seen in the national volume of sales reached 14 of the 27 Federation Units with a highlight, in terms of the magnitude of the rate, to Amapá (-3,7%); Sergipe (-3,1%); Santa Catarina (-2,7%). On the other hand, 12 of the 27 Federation Units had growth, with the biggest results coming from the Federal District (2,7%); Goiás (2,5%) and Tocantins (2,4%). Alagoas (0.0%) registered stability over April 2017.

Over May 2016, the growth of the national volume of sales of the retail (2.4%) reached 20 of the 27 Federation Units, with a highlight, in terms of the magnitude of the rate, to Santa Catarina (11.6%) and Alagoas (9.3%). In the same comparison, the greatest drops were recorded in: Sergipe (-9.6%) and Goiás (-6.2%), as shown in Graph 6.  As to the participation in the formation of the overall rate of the retail trade, the highlights, in order of importance, were:  São Paulo (1.8%), Santa Catarina (11.6%) and Minas Gerais (5.1%).

Concerning the extended retail trade, 22 of the 27 Federation Units posted positive figures in terms of volume of sales when compared with the same period a year ago. The highlights with the highest rates were Espírito Santo (14.9%) and Amazonas (13.7%), as shown in Graph 7. As to the biggest positive contributions in the formation of the extended retail rate, one finds São Paulo (2.9%); Rio Grande do Sul (12.3%); Santa Catarina (12.9%); and Rio de Janeiro (5.9%).
