Cattle slaughter down 10.8%, slaughter of hogs and pigs up 7% in Q3

The third quarter of 2020 recorded the slaughter of 7.58 million cattle head, a 10.8% drop compared to the third quarter of 2019 and an increase of 3.8% over the second quarter of 2020. In the same period, the production of 2.02 million metric tons of bovine carcasses also showed a drop of 8% in relation to the third quarter last year and an increase of 7.6% in relation to the second quarter of 2020.

The data are from Livestock Production Statistics: First results, released today (12), by the IBGE. The complete data, with information by Federation Unit, will be released on December 10.

The survey shows that the production of hogs and pigs totaled 12.57 million head, up 7% over the same quarter last year and 3.8% compared to the second quarter of 2020. The cumulative weight of carcasses reached 1.16 million metric tons, an increase of 9.4% over the 3rd quarter of 2019 and 4.8% compared to the 2nd quarter of 2020.

Chicken slaughter rises 1.8% and reaches 1.50 billion head

The slaughter of chickens accounted for 1.50 billion head, an increase of 1.8% in relation to the 3rd quarter of 2019 and 6.2% in comparison with the 2nd quarter of 2020. The cumulative weight of the carcasses was 3.45 million metric tons, up 0.3% compared to the 3rd quarter of 2019 and 7.1% compared to the 2nd quarter of 2020.

The production of hen eggs was 993.19 million dozens in the third quarter of 2020, an increase of 2% both in relation to the same quarter of 2019 and compared to the second quarter of 2020.

The survey also points out that milk consumption has been returning to the usual level. The acquisition of raw milk was 6.36 billion liters in the third quarter of 2020, an increase of 1.2% compared to the volume registered in the third quarter of the previous year and 10.5% in relation to the second quarter of 2020.

Leather production, on the other hand, follows the downward trend of cattle slaughter. The acquisition of rawhides in the third quarter was 8.02 million whole pieces, 6.6% less compared to the third quarter of the previous year and 9.5% higher compared to the second quarter of 2020.
