Popular in June bonfire festivals, corn has high production in the country

Hominy, tapioca pudding, mungunzá, pamonha, popcorn, corn cake are some examples of much consumed typical dishes in the June bonfire festivals all over the country. The indispensable ingredient is corn, which is one of the main Brazilian agricultural products. The latest grain crop estimates for this year, released in May by the IBGE, totaled 84.5 million t in 2018.

According to the manager of the Systematic Survey of Agricultural Production, Carlos Alfredo Guedes, "last year, corn crop was 15.1% higher, and, as a result, the price of the product fell.
So producers reduced the area of the grain in 2018."

The corn tradition at the June bonfire festivals was also the subject of this week's IBGE Minute.

Peanuts, also a common in the festivals in the form of peanut brittle, peanut candy, caruru, and some alcoholic drinks, has registered significant advances, with the first crop reaching 1.8% compared to 2017, while the second crop got 7%.

Regionally, according to the Municipal Agricultural Survey, Mato Grosso was the largest corn producer, 15.3 metric tons, in 2016. The biggest peanut producer was São Paulo, with 530 thousand metric tons.
