Besides registering the first annual rise (2.5%) since 2013, the industrial output had in 2017 the most widespread growth since 2010, according to the Monthly Industrial Survey - Physical Production - PIM-PF released today by the IBGE. This sector increased in 12 out of 15 places surveyed.

In regional terms, the 2017 result is the best since all the 14 places surveyed in 2010 – Mato Grosso was included only in 2013 – rose, a year in which the industrial output increased 10.2%. Between 2011 and 2016, the most widespread increase was recorded in 2013, when ten places expanded their output, four dropped and one remained stable. In 2016, 14 places posted negative figures and only one increased, causing the national index to fall 6.4%.

The 12 places that rose in 2017 were: Pará (10.1%), Santa Catarina (4.5%), Paraná (4.4%), Rio de Janeiro (4.2%), Mato Grosso (3.9%), Amazonas (3.7%), Goiás (3.7%), São Paulo (3.4%), Ceará (2.2%), Espírito Santo (1.7%), Minas Gerais (1.5%) and Rio Grande do Sul (0.1%). The drops were reported in Bahia (-1.7%), the Northeast Region (-0.5%) and Pernambuco (-0.9%).

"This result is partly due to the period of losses in the industry as a whole, as there were three consecutive years of drop. It provides a very low basis of comparison. We are noticing some improvements in the pace of production, either by external factors, like exports, or by some improvement in the domestic market", explained André Macedo, manager of the survey.

The increase in the manufacture of motor vehicles was one of the reasons of the widespread improvement in the industrial output. "This activity rose in every place investigated. It is the major highlight in the year, either nationally or regionally", highlights André.

The manufacture of motor vehicles was investigated and rose in the Northeast, Bahia, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul and Goiás. Of them, only the Northeast Region and Bahia dropped in the overall index in 2017.
