In September, airfares (21.30%) and fuels (3.43%) boosted the high of 1.25% in the prices of transportation, corresponding to 18% of household expenditures. In Brasília, where the inflation forecast was the biggest one (0.69%) among the surveyed areas, airfares and gasoline grew, respectively, 15.49% and 9.93%. Those results are from the Extended National Consumer Price Index 15 – IPCA-15, which registered a high of 0.11% in September – the lowest result for the month since 2006 (0.05%). The cumulative index over the year was of 1.90%, and of 2.56% for the last 12 months.

The high in transportation was offset by the decrease of -0.94% in food and beverages, which represent nearly 25% of household expenses. The result was sharper among the products for consumption at home (-1,54%), with a highlight to tomatoes (-20.94%), carioca beans (-11.67%, garlic (-7.96%), crystallized sugar (-4.71%) and long life milk (-3.83%). All surveyed areas recorded decrease in this sector.

The IPCA-15 is an indicator, calculated by the IBGE, to measure the inflation between the second half of a month and the first half of the reference month. It comprises families with monthly income of one to 40 minimum wages and it encompasses the Metropolitan Areas of Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, Recife, São Paulo, Belém, Fortaleza, Salvador, Curitiba, and also Brasília and Goiânia.
