About one third of all the rainforests on the planet are located in Brazil. The country also gathers the biggest river system in the world, besides 1.8 million animal species in six different biomes. That places Brazil among the top five countries regarding biological diversity on on Earth. Biomes Amazon, Cerrado, Caatinga, Atlantic Rainforest, Pantanal and Pampa are natural systems which have been affected, throughout the years, by the changes in economic cycles and by the process of occupation of the Brazilian territory.

Those names are based on the type of predominant relief and vegetation in the areas of each biome. Even nowadays, the existing diversity becomes evident as biomes are compared, given the internal characteristics of each one of them. Retratos magazine has selected information that shows the variety of species found here, represented in areas proportional to the space each one of them takes up in the country.
