In Brazil, in 2016, 87.3% of the housing units connected to  general supply system had daily availability of water, against 66.6% in the Northeast Region. There, water was supplied from one to three times a week in 16.3% of the housing units, and from four to six times a week in 11.2% of them. These results can be found in the IBGE's 2012-2016 National Household Sample Survey, released today.

According to Maria Lúcia Vieira, researcher from the IBGE, interruption of water supply services is not a frequent occurrence in the South and Southeast Regions, except in cases of emergency: “When there is not regular supply, the population has to store water of find an alternative source of supply.”

The North Region had the biggest percentage of housing units in which the main form of water supply was the general system (59.8%). On the other hand, the region stood out in terms of supply from a deep well or an artesian well (20.3%); a shallow well, a groundwater well or waterhole (12.7%); and a spring (3.1%).

Backyard burning took place in 5.7% of the housing units

Also in 2016, 86.6% of the housing units in the country garbage was collected directly by an urban cleaning company. Nevertheless, in the Northeast and North that percentage was smaller: 67.5% and 70.2%, respectively.

As for backyard burning, Maria Lucia says that the North (18.5%) and the Northeast (17.0%) recorded that destination as the second most common in both Major Regions: “That practice surely represents a major environmental impact”.

The researcher also points out that the states of Maranhão (29.7%) and Piauí (26%) recorded the biggest percentages of housing units in which backyard burning was a regular practice, whereas the opposite was observed about Rio de Janeiro (1.1%) and São Paulo (0.7%).
