Leveraged by the 6% advance in the sector of supermarkets, the retail sales closed the month of September with a 6.4% growth over September 2016.  Considering the extended retail trade, which includes the sales of the car sector, the growth was even bigger (9.3%). That's what says the Monthly Survey of Trade (PMC), released today by the IBGE.

In relation to the previous month, the sales in September presented a change of 0.5%. In the cumulative index of the year, the result reached 1.3%. In the cumulative index in 12 months, the figure is still negative, -0.6%. Besides the sector of supermarkets, four of the eight activities recorded positive changes in the comparison with September 2016, with a highlight to the sector of furniture and household appliances (16.6%) and apparel and footwear (11.7%). Fuels, in turn, presented a decrease of 4.1%.

According to economist Isabella Nunes, in charge of the survey, the advance in this sector and on the sales in general is associated to the population income increase and the unemployment drop. "Buying food and medicine are basic activities in people's lives. So, any income increase will have an impact on the results of sales in these areas", she explains.
