Industry closed Q3 2017 with an increase of 1.6% in its national output, mainly due to the increased production of motor vehicles. The cumulative increase in 2017 now amounts to 14.8%; against the result of September 2016, industrial output records an increase of 20.9%. There was increase of 0.1% in comparison with the rate of August 2017.

These results come from the Monthly Survey of Industry (PIM), released today by the IBGE. PIM shows the national output of industry increased 0.2% and 2.6% against the figures recorded in August 2017 and September 2016, respectively. As a result, the cumulative change of industry in the last 12 months amounts to 0.4%.

“All comparisons point to motor vehicles as a positive element in the performance of industry”, says André Macedo, manager of the survey. “Exports have contributed to the growth of production in 2017, regarding utility cars mainly, but trucks as well”.

After 39 months of decrease, cumulative rate records a positive figure

This is the first positive result - 0.4% - recorded by cumulative industrial output in 12 months since May 2014, when there had been increase of 0.3%.

According to André, the 12-month indicators used to remain negative, but with deceleration of decrease since June 2016 (-9.7%). “This positive result reflects the gradual recovery of industry, but we are still very close to a zero change”.

The manager highlights that, despite a bigger occurrence of psitive results in 2017, industry has not yet overcome recent losses: “We are now at a production level 17.4% below the record figure reached in June 2013”.
