The unemployment rate (13.3%) held steady in the March-April-May quarter over the previous one (Dec-Jan-Feb: 13.2%), according to the results of the Continuous Pnad of the IBGE. But the number of workers with a formal labor contract (33.3 million) fell by 479 thousand persons in this comparison, and over the same quarter a year ago, the reduction was of 1.2 million persons with a formal labor contract.

"Formal labor contracts have been decreasing in the last two years. The decrease represents more than 2.7 million jobs, so, despite the deceleration of unemployment, clearly these persons are migrating to informal jobs", explained the Coordinator of Income and Labor of the IBGE, Cimar Azeredo.

The number of employed persons by activity increased in General industry (344 thousand more persons), Lodging and food (144 thousand more persons) and in Public administration, defense, social security, education, human health and social services (287 thousand more persons). However, there was decrease in Construction (- 271 thousand persons).

The Brazilian labor market added up to more than 89.7 million employed persons in the March-April-May quarter: 33.3 million employed persons in the private sector with a formal labor contract, 10.5 million employed persons in the private sector without a formal labor contract, 22.4 million self-employed persons, 11.2 million employed persons in the public sector, 4.1 million employers, 6.1 million domestic workers and 2.2 million contributing family workers.
