During this weekend, the IBGE takes part in the Campus Party in Brasília with the Hackaton challenge "Data at Hand", in which competitors should develop programs, applications and games using public information available at the website and show them to the public in a dynamic and accessible format.

The Campus Party is the biggest technological event in the world. It includes 250 hours of activities, in which about four thousand registered persons take part in lectures, challenges (hackathons) and robot and drone battles. The event provides more than a thousand comfortable tents, equipped with 40Gb broadband access to the Internet and a number of other facilities.

The IBGE´s hackathon offer four themes: display of data and/or maps, social networks and educational projects. Responsible for web projects at the IBGE, Ian Nunes explains this initiative: "The idea of participating in the Campus Party has been worked for more than a year. In the first place, we would create our own challenge. However, we thought it would be better to work together with the Campus Party, using their expertise to produce shared content. They helped us a lot. They provided ready-to-use packages for institutions and companies that would like to build stands and offer hackathons, which greatly smoothed our initiative".

The idea is to integrate the IBGE with the information technology age, supported by those who mostly understand this matter. "We hope to take advantage of this vision amongst youngsters to share information and bring the concept of information sharing and integration with the population as a whole to our daily work. It will allow, for example, that fathers and mothers have easy access to the information and can better interact with the society, ask for government actions, take part in initiatives at their children schools, and ultimately exercise their citizenship", states Nunes.
