In January, services sector falls 2.2% over December 2016

In January 2017, the services sector recorded a 2.2% fall in the volume of services rendered, against the previous month in the seasonally adjusted series, after having registered a 0.7% growth in December and 0.0% in November. In the unadjusted series in the comparison with the same month a year ago, the sector had decrease of 7.3%. With such results, the cumulative rate in the year stood at -7.3% and, in 12 months, at 5.2%. The complete publication of PMS can be accessed here.

In the seasonally adjusted series, the segment of Information and communication services recorded growth of 5.5%, whereas the other segments recorded falls, in the following order: Professional, administrative and complementary services (-14.5%), Services rendered to families (-3.6%), Other services (-3.0%) and Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities (-0.7%). The special aggregate of Tourism presented a drop of 11.0%, in comparison with the previous month.
In terms of global rate of volume, not seasonally adjusted, the contributions of the segments were: Professional, administrative and complementary services, with -3.2 pp; Services rendered to families, with -1.9 pp; Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing activities, with -1.1 pp; Other services, with -0.9 pp and Information and communication services, with -0.2 pp.
The nominal revenue changed -1.0% in relation to July, in the seasonally adjusted series, and the unadjusted change stood at 2.0%, in the comparison with the same month in the previous year. The cumulative rate in the year, in the unadjusted series, stood at -2.0% and, in 12 months, at 0.2%.
Mato Grosso (31.1%), Alagoas (13.8%) and Piauí (12.6%) registered growth in services in January over against December
Concerning the regional results of the services sector, in January, the greatest positive changes in volume over December came from Mato Grosso (31.1%), Alagoas (13.8%) and Piauí (12.6%). The greatest negative changes were in Roraima and Amapá (both with -13.1%), Sergipe (-12.8%) and Maranhão (-8.1%).
In the comparison with January 2016, the biggest positive changes were recorded in Alagoas (14.7%), Piauí (8.1%) and Ceará (2.6%). The greatest negative changes were seen in Rondônia (-25.6%), Tocantins(-24.5%) and Amapá (-24.4%).
Pernambuco (16.1%) and Minas Gerais (12.1%) boost in tourism activities
The results of volume of services, in the comparison January 2017/December 2016, by selected Federation Units, by order of change, were: Pernambuco (16.1%), Minas Gerais (12.1%), Santa Catarina (5.5%), Bahia(4.7%), Goiás (4.3%), Espírito Santo (3.7%) and Ceará (2.5%). The negative changes were seen São Paulo(-28.6%), Federal District (-21.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (-8.9%), Rio de Janeiro (-4.0%) and Paraná (-1.5%).
In the comparison with the same month a year ago, the positive changes were the following: Pernambuco (19.8,%), Goiás (11.9%), Minas Gerais (5.7%) and Bahia (4.1%). The negative changes were: Federal District (-34.9%), São Paulo (-23.2%), Rio de Janeiro (-13.6%), Espírito Santo (-9.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (-7.6%), Ceará (-6.4%) and Paraná (-5.1%).
