In June, services sector up 6.6% over May

In June, the volume of services in Brazil increased 6.6% (seasonally-adjusted series), offsetting the drop of 5.0% registered in May - when the trucker's strike took place. It was the biggest result of the time series in January 2011. In relation to June 2017 (seasonally-adjusted series), the volume of services advanced 0.9%, second positive rate in this comparison. As a result, there was reduction in the cumulative index of the year, which went from -1.3% in May to -0.9% in June. In turn, the cumulative index in the last twelve months went from -1.6% in May to -1.2% in June, keeping the upward trend started in April 2017 (-5.1%). The support material of the Monthly Survey of Services is on the right of this page.

The increase in the volume of services (6.6%) occurred in four of the five activities surveyed, with a highlight to transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing, which growing 15.7% in June eliminated the 10.6% loss seen in May, representing the sharpest expansion of the time series initiated in January 2011.

The sector of land transportation also reached the highest rate in the series (23.4%) in June 2018, leveraged mainly by the revenue increase in the enterprises of road transportation of cargo, which represent 59.7% of land transportation. 

The other positive results came from the sectors of information and communication services (2.5%), other services (3.9%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (0.4%), with the first one fully eliminating the 0.8% loss seen in the last two months; the second recovering part of the four-month cumulative loss of 4.1%; and the third recovering part of May retraction (-1.2%). Conversely, services rendered to families fell 2.5% and recorded the second negative rate in a row, accumulating a 3.8% loss.

in the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average increases 0.8% over the previous month, recovering part of the loss seen in the quarter ended in May (-1.4%).

Among the activities, transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (1.9%) registered the sharpest expansion after having decreased 3.0% in May. The other positive results came from the segments of information and communication services (0.5%), other services (0.2%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (0.1%).

In relation to June 2017, the volume of services grew 0.9% in June 2018, with positive results in three of the five activities surveyed and in 38.6% of the 166 types of services investigated.

Among the activities, transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (4.4%) exerted the main positive contribution on the global index, mostly driven by the liberation of the vehicle flows in the Brazilian highways.  

The other positive impacts came from information and communication services (1.4%) and other services (3.4%), leveraged to a great extent by the revenue increase of data treatment, application service providers and Internet hosting services, open TV, telecommunication and custom software development and license in the first sector; and activities of fund management on a fee or contract basis and security and commodity contracts brokerage, in the last one.

The most relevant negative influences came from professional, administrative and complementary services (-3.5%) and services rendered to families (-4.0%), explained to a large extent by the decrease in the revenue of electronic payment solutions, collection agencies and credit bureaus and activities of surveillance and private security in the first sector; and of restaurants, in the last one.

In the cumulative index, over the same period in the previous year, fell 0.9%, with negative rates in three of the five activities and in 58.4% of the 166 types of services investigated. Among the activities, information and communication services (-2.0%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (-2.1%) exerted the main negative impact on the overall index. The positive contributions accumulated in the year came from Transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (0.7%) and other services (2.7%).

Regional results

Regionally, 22 of the 27 states had increases in services in June, compared to the previous month (seasonally-adjusted series). Among the positive results, the highlight was São Paulo (4.6%), with the sharpest increase since the beginning of the time series (started in January 2011) and eliminated the 2.7% drop in May. Other positive results came from Minas Gerais (9.8%), Paraná (10.1%), Rio de Janeiro (3.6%), Mato Grosso (22.6%) and Bahia (9.7%), all of them offsetting May falls due to the trucker’s strike.

In relation to June 2017, the increase in the volume of services in Brazil (0.9%) happened in 8 of the 27 Federation Units, with São Paulo (1.7%), Rio de Janeiro (3.8% ), Minas Gerais (3.5%) and the Federal District (5.9%) as the main positive impacts. The most important negative impacts came from Ceará (-8.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (-2.8%), Paraná (-2.3%) and Espírito Santo (-8.0%).

SPECIAL AGGREGATE OF TOURISM ACTIVITIES

The tourism activity index increased 1.0% from May to June 2018, recovering part of the 1.6% loss recorded in the previous month. Regionally, seven of the twelve Federation Units followed the upward trend, especially São Paulo, which increased 2.7% in the month, accumulating a gain of 15.4% between March and June. Other positive impacts came from Rio de Janeiro (1.0%) and the Federal District (4.7%). Tourism activities in Paraná (-3.1%) and Santa Catarina (-2.7%) showed the most important setbacks, with both accumulating a loss of 5.9% in the last two months.

Compared to June 2017, the volume of tourist activities in Brazil increased by 2.0%, the third positive rate followed in this type of comparison after fourteen negative results and one stable rate. The positive result of June was driven by the increase in air transportation services for passengers. Restaurants had the most important negative influence on tourist services.

In regional terms, there were increases in six of the twelve states investigated in tourism services, especially São Paulo (7.3%), which reached the fourth highest rate followed and the highest rate since February 2014 (11.0%). Other significant positive contributions came from the Federal District (11.0%) and Espírito Santo (9.4%). The negative impacts were from Bahia (-9.0%), Paraná (-10.4%) and Rio de Janeiro (-2.6%).
