Quarterly Livestock Surveys - first results: in Q2 2018, chicken slaughter down in all comparisons

In the second quarter of 2018, chicken slaughter decreased 5.4% in comparison with Q2 of 2017 and 8.3% over the previous quarter, reaching 1.36 billion head. Cattle slaughter increased 3.6% and the slaughter of pigs and hogs recorded a high of 1.9% in Q2 2018 over Q2 2017. In the comparison with Q2 2018 and the first quarter of 2018, cattle slaughter fell 0.4% and that of pigs and hogs, 0.9%. Milk acquisition reached 5.47 billion liters, with a decrease of 3.2% in relation to Q2 2017 and a reduction of 9.0% in relation to the previous quarter. The production of hides retreated 3.5% over Q2 2017 and 7.4% compared with the previous quarter. On the other hand, the production of eggs increased 4.5% compared with Q2 2017, totaling 857.60 million dozens, and grew 1.3% compared with the previous quarter. Chicken slaughter drops 8.3% against Q1 2018

In the second quarter of 2018, 1.36 billion chicken head were slaughtered. This figure represented a retreat of 8.3% over the immediately previous quarter and a drop of 5.4% compared with the same period in 2017.

The cumulative weight of the carcasses was of 3.33 million tonnes in the second quarter of 2018, falling 5.2% in relation to the immediately previous quarter and 1.8% over the same period in 2017.

Cattle slaughter rises 3.6% in annual comparison

In the second quarter of 2018, 7.69 million cattle head under some sort of sanitary inspection were slaughtered.  That volume was 0.4% lower than the one recorded in the immediately previous quarter and 3.6% higher than the one in the second quarter of 2017.

The production of 1.89 million tonnes of cattle carcasses in the second quarter of 2018 increased 0.5% in relation to the first quarter this year and 3.2% over the second quarter of 2017.

Hogs and pigs slaughter adds up to 10.81 million head

In the second quarter of 2018, 10.81 million head of hogs and pigs were slaughtered, representing an increase of 0.9% over the immediately previous quarter and of 1.9% in relation to the same period in 2017.

The cumulative weight of the carcasses was of 977.53 thousand tonnes in the second quarter of 2018, representing an increase of 2.0% in relation to the immediately previous quarter and of 2.8% over the same period in 2017. 

Milk acquisition falls in Q2 2018

In the second quarter of 2018, the acquisition of raw milk by establishments under some kind of sanitary inspection (either federal, state or municipal) was of 5.47 billion liters. This value represented a drop of 9.0% compared with the volume registered in the first quarter this year, a traditional behavior in the time series, since the second quarter usually records the smallest acquisition. The estimate was also 3.2%, smaller than the amount of milk acquired in the same quarter of 2017.

Hide acquisition is 3.5% smaller than in same quarter last year

The tanning houses investigated in the Leather Quarterly Survey – those that carry out the tanning of at least 5,000 whole pieces of cattle raw hide per year – reported to have received 7.94 million whole cattle raw hides in the second quarter of 2018. This volume was 7.4% lower than that registered in the immediately previous quarter and 3.5% lower than that recorded in the second quarter of 2017.

Production of eggs hits 857.60 million, a record for a Q2

The production of hen eggs was of 857.60 million dozens in the second quarter of 2018. Considering the time series started in 1987, that was the biggest production ever registered in a second quarter, being 1.3% bigger than the production in the immediately previous quarter and 4.5% bigger than that recorded in the same period in 2017.
