In December, industry grows in 11 of the 15 places surveyed

Eleven of the 15 surveyed areas had an increase in industrial production from November to December, in the seasonally adjusted series. The highest expansions were in Espírito Santo (5.4%) and Ceará (4.7%), while the sharpest decreases were in Bahia (-4.0%) and Amazonas (-3.7%).

In the cumulative index in 2020, there were decreases in 12 of the 15 locations, with a highlight to Espírito Santo (-13.9%), Ceará (-6.1%) and São Paulo (-5.7%). The positive indexes were registered in Pernambuco (3.7%), Rio de Janeiro (0.2%) and Goiás (0.1%). .

The 0.9% growth in industrial activity from November to December 2020, in the seasonally adjusted series, showed a predominance of positive results, reaching 11 of the 15 surveyed locations. That growth reflects, to a large extent, the return to production in the plants, after measures against the Covid-19 pandemic had been relaxed.

This month, Espírito Santo (5.4%) and Ceará (4.7%) registered the sharpest expansions, with the former eliminating two consecutive months of decline in production, a period in which it accumulated a loss of 2.3%; and the latter, accumulating an expansion of 120.7% in eight months of positive rates in a row.

Pará (3.6%), São Paulo (3.4%), Minas Gerais (3.1%), Mato Grosso (3.0%), Paraná (2.8%), Santa Catarina (2.4% ) and Rio Grande do Sul (1.2%) also showed advances above the national average (0.9%), and Rio de Janeiro (0.2%) and the Northeast Region (0.2%) completed the set of locations with positive monthly indexes.

On the other hand, Bahia (-4.0%) and Amazonas (-3.7%) had the highest decreases in December 2020, with the former decreasing again after accumulating an increase of 35.5% in the May-November period 2020; and the latter eliminating the 3.6% expansion observed in November. Pernambuco (-2.9%) and Goiás (-0.8%) registered the other negative results in this month.

The industry's quarterly moving average index showed an expansion of 1.0% in the quarter ended in December 2020 compared to November after also advancing in November (1.6%), October (2.4%), September (4.8 %), August (7.1%) and July (9.0%), when the predominantly downward trend started in November 2019 was interrupted. Nine of the 15 surveyed locations showed positive rates in that month, with a highlight to the greatest advances recorded by Santa Catarina (2.7%), Paraná (2.5%), Ceará (2.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (1.9%), Northeast Region (1.8%), São Paulo (1, 7%), Minas Gerais (1.4%) and Espírito Santo (1.0%). On the other hand, Goiás (-1.8%), Pará (-1.5%) and Mato Grosso (-1.0%) registered the highest decreases in December 2020.

In the comparison with December 2019, in the non-adjusted series, the industry grew 8.2%, with 13 of the 15 surveyed places showing positive results in December. Rio Grande do Sul (19.7%), Paraná (18.9%), Santa Catarina (18.7%), Minas Gerais (18.4%), Ceará (17.7%), São Paulo (17, 5%), Amazonas (9.6%) and Pernambuco (8.3%) had advances above the national average (8.2%), and the Northeast Region (5.7%), Espírito Santo (4.2%), Pará (2.3%), Mato Grosso (1.2%) and Bahia (0.4%) completed the set of areas with production growth in the monthly index of December 2020. Rio de Janeiro ( -3.9%) and Goiás (-3.5%) recorded decreases this month.

In the cumulative index of 2020, compared to the same period of 2019, production fall reached 12 of the 15 surveyed places, with a highlight to Espírito Santo (-13.9%), Ceará (-6.1%) and São Paulo (-5 , 7%). Amazonas (-5.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (-5.4%), Bahia (-5.3%) and Mato Grosso (-5.2%) also registered sharper negative rates than the national average (-4.5%), and Santa Catarina (-4.4%), Minas Gerais (-3.2%), Northeast Region (-3.0%), Paraná (-2.6%) and Pará ( -0.1%) completed the set of locations with a production drop in the cumulative index over the year. On the other hand, Pernambuco (3.7%), Rio de Janeiro (0.2%) and Goiás (0.1%) had growth in production in this comparison.
