Livestock quarterly surveys – first results: cattle slaughter drops, pigs and hogs and chicken increases in Q1 2020

The first results of the animal production in the first quarter of 2020 pointed out that cattle slaughter retreated 9.2%, that of pigs and hogs increased 5.0% and that of chicken grew 4.8%, compared with the same period of 2019. Compared with the fourth quarter of 2019, the slaughter of cattle and pigs and hogs dropped 10.8% and 0.2%, respectively, whereas that of chicken increased 2.5%. The purchase of raw milk added up to 6.30 billion liters, registering an increase of 1.4% in the annual comparison, but a drop of 5.2% in relation to the previous quarter. However, the acquisition of raw hides by tanning houses fell 12.2% against the first quarter of 2019 and was 5.7% lower than that of the fourth quarter of 2019, adding up to 7.44 million raw hide pieces. 960.61 million dozens of hen eggs were produced in the first quarter this year, an increase of 3.4% in the annual comparison and a drop of 2.5% compared with the immediately previous quarter.

Cattle slaughter drops in both comparisons

7.20 million cattle head were slaughtered in the first quarter of 2020, which represented a negative change of 9.2% in the comparison with the same quarter of 2019. It dropped 10.8% in relation to the four quarter last year.

The production of 1.82 million tonnes of cattle carcasses in the first quarter of 2020 comprised a retraction of 6.5% in relation to the same quarter last year and a drop of 12.8% over the fourth quarter of 2019.

Pigs and hogs slaughter increases 5.0% in the annual comparison

Hogs and pigs slaughter added up to 11.87 million head in the first quarter of 2020, an increase of 5.0% compared with the same quarter a year ago. It retracted 0.2% compared with the fourth quarter of 2019.

The cumulative weight of the carcasses registered 1.06 million tonnes in the first quarter of 2020, which consisted of increases of 7.5% compared with the first quarter of 2019 and of 0.6% in relation to the fourth quarter last year.

Chicken slaughter rises and adds up to more than 1.50 billion head

In the first quarter of 2020, 1.51 billion chicken head were slaughtered. This result meant an increase of 4.8% in relation to the same quarter of 2019. It also rose 2.5% in the comparison with the last quarter of 2019.

The cumulative weight of the carcasses was of 3.47 million tonnes in the first quarter of 2020, increasing 3.3% in relation to the first quarter of 2019. It increased 2.0% over the fourth quarter of 2019.

Milk acquisition increases and reaches 6.30 billion liters

In the first quarter of 2020, the acquisition of raw milk by establishments under some kind of sanitary inspection (federal, state or municipal) was 6.30 billion liters. This value corresponded to an increase of 1.4% compared with the volume recorded in the first quarter of the previous year. On the other hand, it retracted 5.2% in relation to the fourth quarter of 2019.

Leather acquisition drops 12.2% in annual comparison

The tanning houses investigated in the Leather Quarterly Survey – those that carry out the tanning of at least 5,000 whole pieces of cattle raw hide per year – reported to have received 7.44 million whole cattle raw hides in the first quarter of 2020. This amount was 12.2% smaller than that of the first quarter a year ago. It also reduced 5.7% in relation to the fourth quarter of 2019.

Production of hen eggs rises 3.4% over the last year

The production of hen eggs was 960.61 million dozens in the first quarter of 2020. It represented an increase of 3.4% in relation to the same quarter of the previous year. In contrast, it reduced 2.5% compared with the production in the fourth quarter.
