Industrial production increases in 11 of the 15 places surveyed in February

In February 2020, in the seasonally adjusted series, 11 of the 15 surveyed locations showed positive rates. The sharpest ones were in Pará (7.2%), Espírito Santo (5.9%) and Pernambuco (4.5%). Mato Grosso (3.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (3.1%), Paraná (2.1%), Santa Catarina (1.4%), Minas Gerais (1.1%) and Ceará (1, 0%) also had advances above the national average (0.5%), while the Northeast Region (0.4%) and Goiás (0.3%) closed the set of areas with positive rates in February 2020.
On the other hand, Bahia (-3.2%) and Amazonas (-2.2%) had the most intense decreases this month, followed by Rio de Janeiro (-1.0%) and São Paulo (-0.4% ).

In the 0.5% growth  of the national industrial production from January to February 2020 - seasonally-adjusted - eleven of the 15 surveyed places showed positive rates. This month, Pará (7.2%), Espírito Santo (5.9%) and Pernambuco (4.5%) registered the sharpest advances, with the first offsetting the 5.5% decrease observed in the previous month; and the last two completed the second consecutive month of expansion and accumulated gains of 9.5% and 11.3%, respectively.

Mato Grosso (3.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (3.1%), Paraná (2.1%), Santa Catarina (1.4%), Minas Gerais (1.1%) and Ceará (1, 0%) also achieved increases above the national average (0.5%), and the Northeast Region (0.4%) and Goiás (0.3%) completed the set of locations with positive rates in February 2020.

On the other hand, Bahia (-3.2%) and Amazonas (-2.2%) marked the sharpest decreases this month, with the first returning part of the 8.9% expansion seen in January; and the second eliminating the growth registered in the previous month (1.3%). Rio de Janeiro (-1.0%) and São Paulo (-0.4%) also showed negative rates this month.

The evolution of the quarterly moving average index for the industry's total showed a positive change of 0.2% in the quarter ended in February 2020 compared to the level of the previous month, interrupting the downward trend that started in October 2019. Eleven of the 15 surveyed locations showed positive rates this month, with emphasisa highlight to the sharpest advances by Paraná (2.9%), Pernambuco (2.4%), Espírito Santo (1.9%), Rio Grande do Sul (1.6%), Northeast Region (1.4%) and Pará (1.4%). On the other hand, Mato Grosso (-1.1%) and Amazonas (-0.8%) showed the highest decreases in February 2020.

In the comparison with the same month a year ago, the industrial sector showed a fall of 0.4% in February 2020, with five of the fifteen surveyed places pointing to negative results. Minas Gerais (-6.3%) and Espírito Santo (-4.5%) registered the most intense decreases and São Paulo (-3.1%), Amazonas (-3.0%) and Goiás (-1.4 %) registered the other negative rates in the month, all with sharper losses than taht of the industry average (-0.4%).

On the other hand, Pernambuco (12.3%), Rio de Janeiro (9.7%), Pará (7.5%) and the Northeast Region (6.4%) showed the most intense advances in February 2020. Paraná ( 3.6%), Bahia (3.3%), Mato Grosso (3.2%), Santa Catarina (2.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (2.2%) and Ceará (1.9%) also showed positive rates in the month.

In the cumulative result for the period January to February 2020, compared to the same period of the previous year, the reduction observed in national production reached six of the 15 surveyed places, with Espírito Santo (-13.5%) and Minas Gerais ( -10.4%) standing out. Mato Grosso (-1.4%), Goiás (-1.2%) and São Paulo (-0.7%) also registered sharper negative rates than the national average (-0.6%), while Pará ( -0.4%) completed the set of locations with a drop in production in the cumulative index in the year.

On the other hand, Rio de Janeiro (9.7%) and Pernambuco (7.6%) recorded the highest advances in the cumulative index in the first two months of 2020. The Northeast Region (6.4%), Bahia (5.8% ), Ceará (3.3%), Paraná (3.1%), Santa Catarina (1.0%), Amazonas (0.8%) and Rio Grande do Sul (0.5%) also showed positive rates in the cumulative indicator for the period January-February 2020.

The cumulative index in the last twelve months decreased 1.2% in February 2020 and showed a slight increase in the intensity of loss compared to the result of last January (-1.0%). In regional terms, seven of the 15 surveyed locations registered negative rates in February 2020, but nine showed less dynamism compared to last January's indexes. Amazonas (from 5.6% to 4.7%), São Paulo (from 0.7% to 0.0%), Paraná (from 5.2% to 4.6%), Minas Gerais (from -6, 8% to -7.3%) and Ceará (from 2.1% to 1.6%) showed the main losses between January and February 2020, while Rio de Janeiro (from 3.2% to 4.0%) , Pernambuco (from -1.5% to -0.7%), Northeast Region (from -2.0% to -1.5%) and Espírito Santo (from -17.4% to -16.9%) pointed out the gains between the two periods.
