In October, industry grows in seven of the 15 places surveyed

In October 2019, in the seasonally adjusted series, seven of the 15 surveyed locations showed positive rates, following the growth (0.8%) of the national industry. The most significant advances were those of Goiás (4.0%), which had the fifth consecutive positive rate and accumulated a gain of 6.4% in this period, and Amazonas (2.3%), which eliminated the 1.6% loss of September. On the other hand, Espírito Santo (-8.1%) showed the highest decrease in October 2019, thus eliminating the 3.3% growth of the previous month. Compared to October 2018, the industrial sector showed growth of 1.0%, also with seven locations reporting positive results.

In the growth of 0.8% of the national industry production between September and October 2019, in the seasonally adjusted series, seven out of the fifteen surveyed places recorded positive rates, Goiás (4.0%) and Amazonas (2.3%) recorded the sharpest advances, but São Paulo (1.5%), the Northeast Region (1.2%) and Bahia (0.9%) also achieved the increases greater than the national average. Mato Grosso (0.6%) and Rio de Janeiro (0.2%) also had positive results in October 2019.

Paraná (0.0%), in turn,  recorded a null change in October, after three consecutive month of increase. On the other hand, Espírito Santo (-8.1%) recorded the sharpest retreat in October 2019, eliminating all the increase of 3.3% seen in September. The other negative results were indicated in Pará (-1.3%), Ceará (-1.1%), Minas Gerais (-0.7%), Pernambuco (-0.6%), Santa Catarina (-0.6%) and Rio Grande do Sul.

The evolution of the quarterly moving average index for the whole industry showed increase of 0.8% in the quarter closed in October 2019 against the previous month level and maintained the upward trend started in July 2019. Twelve out of the fifteen surveyed places indicated positive rates in the quarter, with a highlight to Amazonas (2.8%), Bahia (2.0%), Northeast Region (1.6%), Goiás (1.6%), São Paulo (1.3%), Pernambuco (1.2%) and Mato Grosso (1.1%). However, Espírito Santo (-2.1%), Pará (-0.8%) and Rio Grande do Sul (0.1%) recorded the retreats in October 2019.

In the comparison to the same month of the previous year, the industrial sector recorded growth of 1.0% in October 2019, with seven out of the fifteen surveyed places indicating positive results. It is worth highlighting that October 2019 (23 days) had one more workday than the same month in the previous year (22). Góias (11.2%), stimulated mainly  by the advances noticed in the sectors of coke, petroleum products and biofuels, food products, motor vehicles, trailers and bodies, pharmaceutical products; and Paraná (9.4%), stimulated by the sectors of motor vehicles, trailers and bodies and food, recorded the sharpest expansions. Above the average, were Amazonas (6.1%), Rio de Janeiro (5.7%), São Paulo (5.0%) and Mato Grosso (2.2%). Pernambuco had a slight advance (0.3%).

However, Espírito Santo recorded the sharpest rebound (-22.5%), under the pressure, mainly, of the negative behavior of the activities of mining and quarrying industry, pulp, paper and paper products and basic metals. Minas Gerais (-3.9%), Pará (-2.8%), Bahia (-1.7%), Rio Grande do Sul (-1.7%), Santa Catarina (-1.6%), Northeast Region (-1.6%) and Ceará (-0.4%) also recorded negative rates this month.

In the cumulative index of the year for the period between January and October 2019, against the same period previous year, there was a reduction in the national production, which achieved seven out of the fifteen surveyed places. Espírito Santo had the highest decrease, of 14.0%, under the pressure, mainly, of retreats recorded in the mining and quarrying industry (, iron ores – pelleted or sintered, crude petroleum oil and natural gas), pulp, paper and paper products (cellulose) and basic metals (iron or steel flexible and drawn pipes, carbon-steel hot-rolled coils, uncoated, and, carbon steel ingots, blocks, rods or plates). Minas Gerais (-4.6%), Northeast Region (-4.0%), Mato Grosso (-3.6%), Bahia (-2.8%), Pernambuco (-2.6%) and Pará (-1.3%) recorded the others negative rates, all of them sharper than the industry average (-1.1%).

In contrast, Paraná (6.9%) and Rio Grande do Sul (3.7%) recorded the highest advances in the cumulative index of the year. Amazonas (2.9%), Goiás (2.8%), Santa Catarina (2.6%), Ceará (1.2%), Rio de Janeiro (0.9%) and São Paulo (0.4%) also recorded positive rates in the period.

In the last twelve months until October 2019, the national industry retreated 1.3%, with, in regional terms, seven out of the fifteen surveyed places recording negative rates. Even so, six places recorded higher dynamism than the September indexes. Goiás (from -0.7% to 1.2%), Rio de Janeiro (from -0.4% to 0.3%), São Paulo (from -1.1% to -0.4%), Paraná (from 5.2% to 5.9%) and Mato Grosso (from -3.8% to -3.3%) recorded the highest gains between September and October 2019, while Espírito Santo (from -8.7% to -11.2%), Rio Grande do Sul (from 5.6% to 4.1%), Pará (from 1.6% to 0.2%) and Santa Catarina (from 3.5% to 2.6%) recorded the main losses between both periods.
