Slaughter of hogs and pigs increases 6.8% against Q2 and hits record

In the 3rd quarter of 2018, the slaughter of hogs and pigs grew 6.8% in relation to the previous quarter and 4.7% in comparison with the same period of 2017. This was a record in the time series initiated in 1997.  Cattle slaughter rose 3.7% in relation to the 3rd quarter of 2017 and 7.1% against the previous quarter, which had been affected by the trucker's strike. Conversely, chicken slaughter fell 3.8% in the comparison with the same period of 2017, but it rose 3.6% in relation with the previous quarter. Milk acquisition increased 14.3% in relation to the 2nd quarter, but fell 0.3% against the same period of 2017.

The acquisition of leather increased 9.7% in relation to the previous quarter and 4.3% over the 3rd quarter of 2017. The production of hen eggs was the biggest recorded in the time series of the survey. The complete publication of the Quarterly Livestock Survey is on the right of this page.

Slaughter of hogs and pigs hits records in July ad August

In the 3rd quarter of 2018, 11.56 million head of hogs and pigs were slaughtered, increasing 4.7% in relation to the same period of 2017 and of 6.8% in relation to the previous quarter. This was a record in the time series started in 1997.

The monthly analysis of the period shows that in the 3rd quarter of 2018 here was record for the months of July and August, with both slaughter numbers recording a little above the 4.0 million head slaughtered. Traditionally, the coldest months favor the consumption of pork and, besides, the exports have increased too.

The slaughter of 523.49 thousand more head of hogs and pigs in the third quarter of 2018, in relation to the same period a year ago, was leveraged by rises in 17 out of the 26 Federation Units under the scope of the survey. Among the States with a share over 1%, the increases were in: Santa Catarina (+137.25 thousand head), Mato Grosso do Sul (+86.07 thousand head), Rio Grande do Sul (+78.44 thousand head), Goiás (+57.97 thousand head), São Paulo (+56.38 thousand head), Paraná (+54.64 thousand head), Mato Grosso (+31.75 thousand head) and Minas Gerais (+20.57 thousand head). Santa Catarina still leads the Slaughter of hogs and pigs, with 26.8% of the national total, followed by Paraná (20.9%) and Rio Grande do Sul (18.3%).

Slaughter of bovine animals increased 7.1% after trucker's strike

In the 3rd quarter of 2018, 8.28 million cattle head were slaughtered, representing a rise of 3.7% in relation to the 3rd quarter of 2017 and of 7.1% in relation to the one registered in the previous quarter, affected by the trucker's strike.

The slaughter of 292.63 thousand more cattle head in the 3rd quarter of 2018 over the same period a year ago was leveraged by the increase in 19 out of the 27 Federation Units - FUs. Among those with a contribution above 1.0%, there were increases in: Mato Grosso (+100.24 thousand head), Rio Grande do Sul (+71.93 thousand head), Tocantins (+52.33 thousand head), Rondônia (+52.19 thousand head), Paraná (+43.98 thousand head), Bahia (+29.43 thousand head), Santa Catarina (+12.08 thousand head), Goiás (+7.9 thousand head), Pará (+3.76 thousand head), São Paulo (+1.29 thousand head), Acre (+ 1.13 thousand head) and Maranhão (+0.84 thousand head).

On the other hand, the biggest reductions were recorded in: Mato Grosso do Sul (- 77.80 thousand head) and Minas Gerais (-14.47 thousand head). Mato Grosso still leads cattle slaughter, with 17.2% of the national share, followed by Goiás (10.3%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (9.7%).

In August, chicken slaughter reaches the second best monthly result of the year

In the 3rd quarter of 2018, 1.43 billion chicken head were slaughtered, representing a decrease of 3.8%% over the same period in 2017, and of 3.6% over the previous quarter. Compared to the nine first months of the year, August had the second biggest volume of slaughtered head, just behind January.

The slaughter of 56.23 million chicken head in the 3rd quarter of 2018, in relation to the same period in the previous year, was determined by drops in the slaughter in 11 out of the 24 Federation Units analyzed in the survey. Among those with a contribution above 1.0%, there were decreases in: Santa Catarina (-36.27 million head), Paraná (-20.26 million head), São Paulo (-6.97 million head), Rio Grande do Sul (-6.41 million head), Minas Gerais (-3.49 million head), Mato Grosso do Sul (-3.40 million head) and Bahia (-523.65 thousand head).

On the other hand, increases were reported in: Mato Grosso (+12.19 million head), Goiás (+7.94 million head), Federal District (+1.87 million head) and Pará (+1.50 million head).

Paraná remained leading by a wide margin the slaughter of chicken in Brazil, with 31.7% of the national participation, followed by Rio Grande do Sul (15.0%) and Santa Catarina (13.0%).

Hen eggs production is the biggest of the time series

In the 3rd quarter of 2018, 919.47 million dozens of hen eggs were produced, an increase of 4.9% in relation to the production of the previous quarter and 9.0% above the result of the 3rd quarter of 2017. The resulting production from the 3rd quarter of 2018 was the greatest recorded in the survey - both for a third quarter and for the time series.

In the comparison with the third quarter of 2017, the production of 75.57 million more dozens of eggs, at national level, was leveraged by the increases in 23 out of the 26 FUs with eligible chicken farms. In this comparison, the greatest quantitative increases occurred in São Paulo (+24.74 million dozen) and in Espírito Santo (+14.28 million dozens).

The state of São Paulo is still the biggest egg producer, with 29.7% of the national production, followed by Espírito Santo (9.6%), Minas Gerais (9.0%) and Paraná (8.5%).

Purchase of milk rises 14.3% over Q2

In the 3rd quarter of 2018, the acquisition of raw milk by establishments under some kind of sanitary inspection (either federal, state or municipal) was of 6.26 billion liters, representing a fall of 0.3% over the amount produced in the 3rd quarter of 2017. IN relation to the previous quarter, the volume was 14.3% higher.

IN the comparison with the 3rd quarter of 2018 with the same period in 2017, the reduction was of 18.91 million liters acquired by the dairy farms was influenced by the drops in 11 of the 26 FU taking part in the Survey.

The retraction was observed in all regions of the country, and the most relevant ones occurred in Santa Catarina (-50.07 million liters) and Rio Grande do Sul (-28.81 million liters), followed by Rio de Janeiro (-17.29 million liters), Minas Gerais (-14.78 million liters) and São Paulo (-14.51 million liters).

On the other hand, Goiás and Paraná presented significant rises of 56.78 million liters and 31.19 million liters, respectively.

Minas Gerais was the main state as to milk purchase, accounting for 23.6% of the national figure, followed by Rio Grande do Sul (14.8%) and Paraná (13.1%).

Purchase of leather rises 9.7% over Q2

In the 3rd quarter of 2018, the tanning houses investigated in the Quarterly Survey of Leather reported to have received 9.11 million whole cattle rawhide. This figure represented increases of 9.7% over the previous quarter and of 4.3% against the 3rd quarter of 2017.

The comparison between the 3rd quarters of 2017 and 2018 indicate a positive change of 401.52 thousand pieces in the total purchased by the establishments. The positive highlights in absolute numbers stood with Tocantins (+179.10 thousand pieces), Rondônia (+177.68 thousand pieces), Mato Grosso do Sul (+118.46 thousand pieces), Maranhão (+86.48 thousand pieces), Rio Grande do Sul (+69.70 thousand pieces), Pará (+48.59 thousand pieces) and Paraná (+48.03 thousand pieces).

The greatest absolute reductions occurred in Bahia (-136.26 thousand pieces), São Paulo (-136.15 thousand pieces), Espírito Santo (-69.21 thousand pieces), Minas Gerais (-32.97 thousand pieces) and Mato Grosso (-17.78 thousand pieces).

Despite the reduction, Mato Grosso keeps leading the ranking of Federation Units that receive rawhide pieces to be processes, with 17.4% of the national contribution, followed by Mato Grosso do Sul (12.6%) and São Paulo (11.4%).
