In August, services sector advances 1.2% over July

In August, the services sector grew 1.2% compared to the previous month, after also advancing in June (4.9%) and decreasing 2% in July (seasonally-adjusted series). Compared to August 2017 (non-adjusted series), the services sector grew by 1.6%, the third positive rate of the year in this type of comparison. Year-to-date was -0.5%, the slowest decline since December 2014 (2.5%). The 12-month cumulative index, from -1.0% in July to -0.6% in August 2018, has kept the predominantly upward trend since April 2017 (-5.1%) and recorded the least intense negative rate since June 2015 (-0.2%).

The advance from July to August took place in three of the five activities investigated, with a highlight to transportation, support services to transportation and mailing, which grew by 3.2% and recovered part of the July loss of 3.9%. It is worth highlighting the effects of the truck drivers' strike in May (-10.2%) and June (15.4%) in this segment. The other positive results came from professional, administrative and complementary services (2.2%, fully recovering the loss of 1.1% in July) and other services (1.0%, partial recovery of 3.0% July). On the other hand, information and communication services (-0.6%) and services rendered to families (-0.8%) had a negative influence, with the latter offsetting part of the July growth (4.1%), when it recovered the 4.0% loss accumulates between May and June. Also in the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index for the volume of services advanced 1.3% in the quarter ended in August 2018 compared to the previous month; thus, eliminating the fall observed in the quarter ended in July (-0.2%) and reached the most intense rate of the time series. Among the sectors, transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (4.4%) had the most intense expansion, after registering a negative change (-0.2%) in July. The other positive results came from the professional, administrative and complementary services (0.5%) and other services (0.5%), both recovering part of the losses of July (-0.6% and -0.7%, respectively). On the other hand, services rendered to families (0.0%) and information and communication services (-0.1%) remained stable in July and August.

In relation to August 2017, the services sector increased by 1.6%, with progress in three of the five activities and in 47.0% of the 166 types of services investigated. Among the activities, transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (4.6%) exerted the main positive influence. The other positive impacts came from services rendered to families (5.0%) and other services (1.3%). On the other hand, the most relevant negative contribution came from information and communication services (-1.1%). The segment of professional, administrative and complementary services (-0.3%) also declined.

The cumulative index of the year decreased 0.5%, with negative rates in three of the five activities and in 56.6% of the 166 types of services investigated. Among activities, information and communication services (-1.7%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (-2.0%) had the main negative impacts. The other sector that also declined was that of services rendered to families (-0.9%). On the other hand, the positive contributions were from the segments of transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (1.3%) and other services (2.3%).

RESULTS BY AREAS

Regionally, between July and August (seasonally adjusted series), there was expansion in 21 of the 27 states, following the national advance of 1.2%. The positive highlights came from São Paulo (1.0%), Rio de Janeiro (2.3%) and Pernambuco (7.1%, fully recovering the fall of 2.4% in July). The first two recovered part of the losses of July (-1.7% and -7.0%, respectively). On the other hand, the main negative contributions came from Goiás (-1.2%) and Espírito Santo (-1.2%), both returning the gains of 1.3% and 1.7%, respectively, in July.

In relation to August 2017, the expansion of the volume of services in Brazil (1.6%) was seen in 13 of the 27 Federation Units. The main positive influence was São Paulo (3.0%), with progress in all five activities investigated, with a highlight to information and communication services (3.5%) and transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (2, 3%). Other relevant positive pressures came from the Federal District (8.1%) and from Santa Catarina (4.3%). On the other hand, the most important negative impact came from Rio de Janeiro (-1.9%).

In the cumulative index of the year, compared to the same period of the previous year, there was decrease in 22 of the 27 Federation Units. The main negative impacts in regional terms occurred in Rio de Janeiro (-1.4%), Ceará (-8.3%), Paraná (-2.3%) and Bahia (-3.5%). On the other hand, São Paulo (1.1%) recorded the most relevant positive contribution.

SPECIAL AGGREGATE OF TOURISM ACTIVITIES

The index of tourism activities increased by 2.8% between July and August, eliminating the July loss of 0.9%. Regionally, all 12 Federation Units followed this growth, with Bahia (6.3%), Rio de Janeiro (2.8%), the Federal District (13.0%) and Pernambuco , 3%). Other significant positive impacts came from Ceará (7.1%), Minas Gerais (2.8%) and São Paulo (0.6%).

Compared to August 2017, the volume of tourism activities in Brazil increased by 7.8%, mainly driven by the increase in passenger air transportation services, hotel and catering services and other prepared food services. On the other hand, the segments of tour operators and reservation services in general had the main negative contributions. With the positive result of this month, tourism reaches the highest positive rate since February 2014 (15.0%).

In regional terms, still in comparison with August of last year, 11 of the 12 states where the indicator is investigated showed progress in tourism services, especially São Paulo, which has its sixth consecutive positive rate and reaches the highest result since February 2014 (11.0%). Other significant positive contributions came from Pernambuco (18.4%), Ceará (20.8%) and Rio de Janeiro (3.3%). On the other hand, the only negative impact was with Paraná (-6.7%).

In the cumulative index of the year, the special aggregate of tourism activities showed growth of 1.0% over the same period last year, driven mainly by hotels, car rental and travel agencies. On the other hand, the main negative impact remains with the segment of restaurants. Regionally, eight of the 12 areas surveyed also registered positive rates, especially São Paulo (3.5%), followed by Pernambuco (4.9%) and Minas Gerais (1.9%). Conversely, Rio de Janeiro (-4.8%) was the main negative influence.
